  1. Sjors, your served ropes look really good! Like Mobbsie says, are your deadeyes supposed to be straight across and level or on a slope?
  2. Steve, well done on finishing off that planking. I would be proud of that! Now I am looking forward to what you do next...still trying to visualize the finished product in my mind. I find this entire project quite fascinating.
  3. She is already looking beautiful, sharp clean lines and A++++ planking!!!
  4. So what would you recommend other than the dremel router then? That was the first miniature router I had ever seen, so did not even know of their existence until a week ago.
  5. Steve, I am very impressed with your planking job, yes, it may be painstakingly slow...but I am betting the extra time will pay its dividends when you put her in the water. Beautiful work my friend!
  6. Michael, this looks fascinating...I will watch quietly and admire your craftsmanship.
  7. PS4?!?! you are supposed to be building a ship, not playing games! lol
  8. Sorry to hear about the setback Sjors...I think I qualify as the queen of reworks...it does delay things a bit, but the results are usually better the next time around.
  9. Sam, I like...so how do you like the dremel router? I just came across one of those in the store and was wondering how well they work...was thinking of putting it on my Christmas list.
  10. Adriaan, I am amazed at the depth of this ship...especially that bow shot that lets you look deep inside to see the stairways going to the upper decks. It is very easy to imagine oneself climbing the stairs, walking along the railings etc....now need some animal figurines for that stable area.... Glad you found a dowel for the borken mast, I am sure you will be happier once it is replaced!
  11. She is looking quite beautiful Adriaan, the wood work actually shines in the pic above, and she is picture perfect. Glad to see your broken mast is holding together as well!
  12. Adriann, I know exactly what you mean about tight budgets...if the dowel will work as is, then use it...possibly it can be changed at a later date if needed.
  13. Good point, I know augie says he juts puts a dab of ca on the bulkheads/frames, then lays the plank over. But you are right, Augie's are not seaworthy either...hmmm guess that just means you have to do it the old slow, painstakingly methodical way!
  14. Sounds like a good fix to me Sam, easy enough to cover a hole with a coil of rope, or anything else that might be found a deck....I like it.
  15. Yep, that is why Augie uses thick set CA, says it gives him time to shift the planks a bit, but then in 30 seconds he is ready for the next plank, no clamping and drying time. Me, I am not sure I am ready for that step yet, don't trust my bending and shaping skills
  16. I am betting there is a seamstress somewhere in your town...if you took her the kit made sails and your cloth I would bet she could make you new sails for less than $20. Not a whole lot involved in those particular sails, all straight lines and such, my bet is she could whip them out in less than an hour, might be worth checking into...
  17. Hmmm thick set CA.....I know I am hyper sensitive to the stuff and try to avoid it all costs because I know I will be down for 2-3 days after the first whiff of fumes. I did break down and purchase a painter's respirator mask with filters for chemicals....I am guessing that the reason behind the CA is you can move rather quickly on the planking? I am not sure I am confident enough in my planking abilities to give that a try....yet
  18. Sjors, for mine the shroud lines were only served where they go around the masts. I take it that was done to protect the ropes from rubbing on the masts and fraying.....I have seen other models where the outer shroud lines are served from top to bottom. I don't know what is accurate, or if it is different for each ship.
  19. Good pics Augie, she looks crisp and clean....I know from reading ahead on the Syren the gunport thing is much more complicated than what I am used to. Expect lots of questions when I get there!
  20. Eric, step away and come back when you are ready. I had to do the same thing on mine. It is better to do that until the urge to pick her back up strikes again, rather than get so frustrated you trash all your beautiful work. She can be finished without sails and will look great too, but what was the problem with the kit sails? I used the kit ones, and they work pretty darn good, they may not be accurate, but neither is the running rigging so together they make for a display worthy ship
  21. IMHO they belaying pins look just fine. I am looking at the spacing between holes, if you had smaller pins then the scale of the spacing of holes on the pin rack would be out of whack
  22. Good progress Steve, as for mishaps, well we know they happen, it is the recovery that matters!
