Best of luck with your recovery. May it be as speedy as can be.🤞

    Thanks Ken, appreciated.

It's going to take a bit of work to get things moving properly again. I guess that I did o.k. on the Bismarck build thus far with 1.5 arms....🙂 (Not as young as I used to be.... (Cliche))

I just don't wish to break anything at this late stage in construction.

    Cheers and Regards,

    Harry.

Glad you're on the mend, Harry, those rotator cuff injuries take a long time to heal. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress reports. Best wishes!

    Thanks Gentlemen.

  3. Hi All,

A quick update.... (Well, an update when you're not having an update)

It's been some time since I posted on this build, it's still sitting on my workbench a little unloved.

I am hoping to getg the Rigging underway in the very near future but as I have mentioned in the past, I am still limited by my right Rotator-Cuff injury and cannot lift my arm very much, something that has been plaguing me since the injury in August 2021.

So, I'm now on my weight machine to help myself get things moving properly, and I need to move properly as there are many delicate bits to knock off!!

I was hoping for assistance from my partners son but for one reason or another, this has not occurred as yet.

I am also deliberating about whether or not I'll do the Deck Decals, I have a bit of time to think about it a little longer.... 🙂

Apart from the Rigging, the rest of the sub-assemblies are ready to be attached, (Boats/AA Guns.), so not much at all really.

(I did toy with the idea of starting something new but decided against this as I just cannot build multiple projects.

So, I have not given up and apologies to anyone hoping for something positive from myself, but it is coming!!

    Cheers and Regards,

    Harry.

The real question that you need to answer is “what is the market value where I live?”  If people are quoting USA EBay prices, they are based on freight charges to destinations within the USA.  Overseas shipping charges are much higher.

If there is an active market for your kit within New Zealand these EBay prices might be realistic but if you have to ship it overseas you might have to discount it to account for higher shipping costs.

    Roger

    Hi Roger,

    Thank you for the advice.

    Cheers and Regards,

Thye Mamoli 1/90 scale Victory retails new for around $800.00. The rulke of thumb is usually 50% of retail on resale of kits. But it really comes down to what you want and what someone is willing to pay for it. If it's an out of production kit and someone just has to have it, the sky is the limit. I have seen this kit go for $250.00-$300.00 on Ebay. I know this is probably not the news you wanted to hear.

I don't see where Dusek has released a new version of the 1:90 Victory.  The kits out there will be the original Mamoli kit which have been out of production for several years.

I'm seeing them on eBay for $449 and up..

    Thank you Gentlemen,

    Some food for thought....

I have seen a couple on E-Bay for over USD 700.00

I'll give it a go on the New Zealand "Trade Me" site first and see how I get on.

    Cheers and Regards,

    Harry.

At long last, she is mounted to her base! Very pleased with how this came out, considering it was my first attempt at mounting like this. The base turned out great!

I will be making a plaque when it's all finished with a fun tribute to my grandfather. But for now, I can move on!

I'm finished.  Railings completed and all the little do dads done.  The railing for the other side was easier than the first, having had the experience.  Pictures of the completed ship attached.  I'm happy with my decision to keep the brass natural.  It's a showcase of my modeling skills (such as they are)--not something attempting to be a museum scale model.

I've decided my future projects.  At first I was going to do the major Battleships:  Bismarck, Yamato and Missouri.  But, thinking about it, I've added Enterprise CV-6--the ship type that obsoleted the battleship.  All in 1:200 scale.  Have to go to all-plastic for this, though.  The wooden hull for Bismarck wasn't all that difficult and I really don't need to do that again (nor would my shoulder want to do all that sanding, again).  I now have all 3 future kits (Nichimo and Trumpeter) in hand, and the super detail PE sets that go with them.  Next up is the Nichimo Yamato.  I have not found any build logs for this ship on this site, so it's going to be all virgin territory for me.  So, for any other future builders, I will do a build log.  I'm thinking that I will actually paint the future models since all the superstructure is plastic, not wood and brass like Amati's Bismarck.

I'll see if I can figure out how to log this build as "completed" later.

To achieve what you have done is certainly a testament to your skills, great individualism!!

(I'm still not finished my Bismarck; I'm having trouble with Rigging due to Rotator Cuff not properly healed, (I don't wish to break anything on the ship....), so will try to enlist some assistance from my partners son in the near future.)

Looking forward to you Yamato build.

    Hi Harry,

Had family that farmed nearby so was fun to see Manaia pop up.  The other issue in the UK is the houses are centrally heated which is great, I struggle when I go back to NZ but it does mean they use more energy.

OC - hope you get back into it I have had to put my village on hold with renovations etc and was looking through your log for inspiration, your figure painting is a really high standard and would love to see if finished.

    Thanks Chap,

Been here for a couple of years now....

Not sure  when I will  be back on this  - I will be honest  I have been  frighten'd by our  price increase  in energy  - gas and electric, they  estimate it will be  300%  more   each  year,   that has led  to me  to become a bit  OCD   about  using  electric  things around the house  - especially  my  modelling lamp  on my bench,   we  have even  stopped  using our  cooker  - only  using our  microwave  for meals  now,   and even the  kettle for drinks  I have started  only  boiling  a bare min  for  our cups.

The increase  in power  charges   is  Ridiculous.

    OC.

    My God!!

Where in the world are you and more importantly, who does that to consumers?

    300% increase is insane!

    Some Progress on the Hull

No, I haven't given up. We took a couple of long weekend trips and hosted a big block party, so between packing, driving, and yard work I haven't had much time to work on the Seguin. I have done a lot of filling and sanding on the hull, and just applied my first coat of primer. Then we'll see where the worst defects are.

    436858175_filler00.jpg.7cc6d020b83b0abaa7538c1a12e8655e.jpg

I applied two coats of Famowood thick wood filler, and sanded most of it off. It's for major cracks and minor reshaping. Then I applied 2 coats of Aquacoat thin filer. It's really for filling open-grained wood but it gives a mirror smooth finish on basswood.

    679279417_filler01.jpg.2c49e8c7d89fa8b5b41fae623cd511a0.jpg

The hull looks pretty rough after the Famowood,

    684034299_filler02.jpg.41f0d4d2ad945338a480a491ce59fc1c.jpg

but much better after the Aquacoat. It's tempting to add some stain and leave it au naturale, but with the filler and CA residue, I am afraid that the finish would be blotchy.

    1428645523_Proxxonsander.jpg.6d04d479d3d25be520b1ddc601b580b1.jpg

I sanded the hull by hand with a thin foam sanding pad, and used my Proxxon oscillating sander for the details. Proxxon supplies some terrible sandpaper sheets with the sander, so I make my own with my favorite sandpaper and double-sided tape. I make long strips and just cut of a new piece when needed. I was having trouble sanding the tight curvature on the stern when it occurred to me to make tiny pads out of the foam. They work great! Why haven't I thought of that before?

While I was waiting for the filler to dry I stained the deck and some basswood strips for the gunwales. They go on after the hull is painted.

    Hi Rod,

    Nice "Foundation" work.

I have the same "Proxxon" device and cut my own Sanding pads also.

The foam idea is great!! (I'll file that one in the gray matter for later use!!  🙂)

    Cheers and Regards,

    Harry.

I know exactly what you mean Harry! But before long you will love the final product.

Your photos look great. It's interesting to see your work area, and even a hint of the NZ scenery out the window. Before you're done post a photo of your stack of partworks magazines.

    Hi Rod,

I wondered where you got to.... 🙂 (I've been looking for "Seguin" updates!!)

I think that the "Beastie" will be finished soonish.

Well, I cannot take a photo of the magazine "Stack" as I have them filed in 3 "Eastlight" ring binders. (One for the build and two for the Bismarck history and warfare at sea history.)

(I can take a photo of the last two issues for you before they get filed though. 🙂)

    More Bismarck build stuff tomorrow.

    Cheers and Regards,

    Harry.

  12. Hi All,

    Very small update:

(Mostly gratuitous photos that are hopefully better than my previous attempts.)

So, a little closer to construction completion, Hawse Reel installation, Catapult completion, Etc....

Shortly, I'll get various Eyebolts installed prior to rigging and prepare Deck fixings for Anchor Chains.

I need to "Prototype" Accommodation Ladders.

Anyway, I'll let the photos do the talking.... 🙂

    Cheers.... HOF.
