  1. Buying that exact same kit direct from Maris Stella is currently priced at $376 USD.  Obviously you will pay shipping on top of that.  I have no idea why Model Expo is marking it up so much.  Even with their frequent 40-50% off sales you might still be better off buying directly from Croatia for this kit.

The Maris Stella build logs that I've seen show some really good quality parts and excellent wood, so they should be priced higher than an equivalent sized Model Shipways kit IMO.

Mr. Van Dahm, I have two questions for you concerning the upcoming NRG convention at the Channel Island Maritime Museum or other decided location. Does the Guild get to secure certain hotels and/or rates to those attending the conferences? Also, with this event being in California, do you know if attendees are going to be required to have received COVID vaccinations prior to attending? I am looking at being at the convention this year and my father coming along as well.

An email was sent out to NRG members earlier today, not sure it's not posted here...

    2021 CONFERENCE CANCELLED

The Board has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2021 Conference.

Many of our previous attendees are senior citizens or have high risk factors for contracting COVID-19. Therefore, the Board has concluded that many members will still be reluctant to travel to attend the event this Fall.

We have been in contact with the Channel Islands Maritime Museum and are hopeful that we will be able to hold the 2022 Conference there.

Our Annual Meeting will be a virtual event later in the year.  Details will be announced in the Secretary’s News Letter when the date is determined.

  3. I haven't spent much time in the shop lately as I just got back from being out of the country for a fair amount of time, but before I left I did make some more planking progress which never got posted, because it never got transferred off my camera!

Pictures speak better than words, so have some pictures.

It's missing that aft plank because I'm an idiot and kept working too late when I was tired.  I got it to fit perfectly dry, then started gluing it down and got about half-way back when I realized that I had flipped it and had glued the aft end of the plank midships... I tried to get it off quickly enough but I screwed it up and that plank will need to be remade.

I'm honestly not very happy with my planking on this.  I think I was using too much force getting the planks into position instead of spending more time pre-bending them, and in the process because the frames are so flimsy, I think I forced some of them out of alignment as there are some dips and rises in the planking that I don't think are fixable, but we shall see when I get some more time to get back into this build.

    Hi Bob

I've been thinking about replacing my Dremel which I've had for years with the Foredom tool.  Are they really as good as they look.  I know there's a lot of Chinese rip offs available but if I did take the plunge I'd pay the asking price for the genuine thing.  I've just never met anyone who owns one and has put it through its paces?

A friend of mine who isn't very active on this forum these days uses the Foredom tools and I've had the opportunity to look at and play with them a bit.  They blow away any of the hobby stuff like Dremel.  Extremely fine speed adjustments and foot pedal controls.  Excellent quality and he used them to great effect in his prior hobby of carving where he won many awards for his work.

A nice Foredom tool is on my 'wish list' for sure.

Thanks, I wouldn’t have thought of that. I’d always used blue painters tape as the adhesive doesn’t leave any residue on the wood.

I must say the lathe is absolutely the best dust generating tool I own 😊

Clearly a man who doesn't own a thickness sander!

My personal preference for shaping masts/spars in the lathe is to use a support that follows the tool head while turning square stock that is firmly affixed at both ends, but I don't think that really works with the Proxxon lathe as I don't believe it even has a tool head type thing, but rather a tool 'rest' I believe?

    P.S.

It's hard to Google " Holly Wood "..  Guess why? 😁

    Try " Holly lumber "

Looks like some good pricing here, and they sell by board foot in 4/4 or 8/4 lumber (if they actually have any), which might be a good deal for anyone looking for larger than 1x1x12 pieces.  For small turning blanks those are excellent prices if the quality is good.

Cookwoods have holly on sale at the moment. I have got wood from them in the past and have been pleased with the quality. Never bought holly from them though and my wallet is a bit empty at the moment.

    https://www.cookwoods.com/collections/holly

Even on sale I would not buy Holly from here, it's too expensive.  Buy it from Gilmer Wood (link in the first post).

Example - Cookwoods has a 2" x 2" x 12" turning square on sale for $55.99 (A Grade) or $65.99 (Premium Grade).  No picture of the actual piece you will get.

Gilmer has a 1-7/8" x 2-7/8" x 23-3/8" piece of American Holly for $56.90.  You can see pictures of the exact piece you will be getting and select the one you want (all different dimensions/prices).

More than twice as much wood for basically the same price or cheaper at Gilmer.

    Shop around guys!
