True, but I never said that it was 'everyday life' keeping me from doing stuff with boats. Combination of work, other hobbies that currently have my attention, and a GF who lives in another country so I'm spending a fairly significant amount of time traveling and not being here! I do want and intend to get back to the ship-building, but don't have a timeline for it.

Frank - don't apologize for making one of the best logs on the site! Your logs are great because you include so much, please continue! Great metal work, really good stuff to see.

Looking good Jean-Paul. On the joint, wait to see what it looks like after you sand it a bit to make the joints perfectly smooth and then see how pronounced it is. The cedar looks nice! I didn't do anything to make the joints on my deck furniture stand out, so it's interesting to see how yours looks. Pretty good IMO.

For the sweep ports I made a small brass jig that had three holes. I used a smaller drill to drill the outside holes where the ends of the ports were, and then used an exacto knife, micro saw and files to join the center larger hole to the outside holes to complete the shape.

Looks nice and clean, great work so far! One thing that I see in the photo is that it looks like the stem sticks out a bit from the keel (i.e. stem is wider it appears), you might want to get those to be even at some point, but no reason it has to be done right now if you are waiting for the final planking. Might just be something that looks wrong in a photo, but actually isn't because of the way the light is hitting it.

Great detailing Frank, and good choice to change the rigging, even though I didn't notice it was wrong until Roger pointed it out.

Great solution for making the aft rail stanchions Frank. Not only looks good, but functional!

Wise decision, the kit castings are not good at all. You won't regret that choice!

Nice work on the transom. One note of caution - as you are following the practicum, make sure to compare everything Bob says against the plans and the kit instructions (even though he tells you not to), as well as reading ahead a lot (in both places). While overall I found the practicum very useful when I was building this kit, by the end I was only using it as an 'order of assembly and checklist', as while it starts out very solid, by the rigging phase he was just skipping over things and/or doing them in an order which I found made no sense, and in some cases would not work at all when done the way he described. I think the problem is that he builds the model completely, and then goes back and writes the practicum, and nobody has a perfect memory. I do not regret purchasing the practicum as I think it allowed me to get deep into the build with a lot less trouble than I might have had otherwise, but I just caution you to use common sense and study things before blindly following what Bob says to do.

Looking good so far JP. I have very little time to cruise the forums these days, but I will try to drop in and check on your build from time to time, so if you have any questions I'll try to answer them, but I can't promise that it will be timely. Have fun, it's a great model to build.

Beautiful work. I love it every time you post an update with photos. -
Nice progress Gary. I really like your system for making the deck beams where they don't go all the way across by making the entire assembly and then cutting out the center. Great idea!

I will be out of town (actually, out of the country) on the weekend of the 21st, but any other weekend should be open for me.

Good progress, but be careful not to pull the shrouds into each other with the ratlines. Looks like you have the middle two shrouds getting pretty tight together compared to the outer shrouds as you move towards the top. Not changing the shroud spacing is probably the most difficult part about doing the ratlines in my opinion!

True, but I found it went fairly quick. I think I finished it in two days once I got in a rhythm. It's only got that single set to do on each side!

Good deal. I just know that when you cinch down a screw that last little bit, it imparts a twisting force on the top piece of wood, and that would concern me! I assume that even with the force, once you have multiple frames on and they are all braced to one another, none of them could really twist even if there was a bit of slop in the fit. Carry on! I'll keep watching.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
