Ryland Craze reacted to rshousha in 1:8 Ferrari Timossi Racer ‘Arno XI’ (Special Edition)
Here's a piece of the hull. All correct rivets included. Sorry, I don't seem to have a bigger picture. In those days, computer memory space was still being counted.

So now the 3 gaffs and the boom are installed. This is the fun stuff.

Thanks David and Rusty,
I decided to make up both the AYC and my own Pear/Box knee of the head to look at the difference in color and grain appearance and I have decided to go ahead with my decision to make the framing in Pear.

The major portion of masking and painting is now complete. She's ready to get some panel line treatment and touch ups before applying decals.

Looking good Jesse. The finish line is in sight. You have built a highly detailed model of the Syren that will be an inspiration for other Syren ship modelers.

Ryland Craze reacted to Worldway in Byrnes Model Machines
I put in an order for the Byrnes disc sander. They are closed for the holidays so definitely won't see anything until the new year. However, I see there is no unboxing or review videos on Youtube so I may do one. My 13 year old knows how to do this so may rely on him for direction.

Greetings in the new year friends!
I did not touch AVOS over the Xmas eve. My 3 childern kept me busy enough but had a great time with family!
So the only update would be....... New replacement sail has arrived from MK (thanks a lot), I have managed to remove the Bolt rope so sail is ready to be rigged.
Happy New Year to ALL of you and let's finish AVOS!!!

Ryland Craze reacted to JesseLee in Syren by JesseLee - FINISHED - Model Shipways - scale: 1:64
Life around here has done everything possible to keep me from this build. All I have left is the two flags. I really wanted to make a lifeboat to hang from the back davits but it doesn't look like that will happen anytime in the near future. I made a small cleat by flattening the end of a metal pin. I then filed it down to a very tiny size filing a very sharp point to stick in the staff. Forgot to take pics of this process. Made a very tiny hole with a micro twist drill and pinned it into the bottom of the staff on the bowsprit cap. Dipped the sharp point of the cleat in CA glue before pinning it in. I'm trying to rig up a block and cleat rig for this instead of just tying the (Jack?) flag to the staff. Folded and glued the flags sides together. Getting some folds set in them, I know the shaping will need changing a bit before they are done.

Glad to see you back in the workshop. I hope your recovery is going well and I am glad that Santa was good to you. Wishing you and Marge a Happy New Year and good health in 2020.

Ryland Craze reacted to Hubert Boillot in Can't find your tools?
My workbench (used essentially for 1/32 plastic aircraft models) used to shrink to the usual free one-square-foot.
I have invested in Hobbyzone (hoobyzone.pl) modules, and my modelling life was changed. Now, part of the discipline in modelling is to end up any session (admittedly not as frequent as I could wish) with a cleaning and putting back tools in their right place.
It makes modelling so much more enjoyable, especially when you start every time with a clean (and orderly) bench .

I love my wife dearly but she seems to be a walking entropy engine. She can walk through a room and things will appear or disappear on whatever horizontal surface strikes her need at the moment. At some point we get the re-arrangement a-la Derek's post above at which point I will be able to find nothing.
As a result I am super diligent about scooping up tools and things that she has borrowed after she has used them.

Ryland Craze reacted to Worldway in Can't find your tools?
I am notoriously bad for grabbing a tool, using it then throwing it on the bench. Eventually I can't find anything and end up with a bench to cluttered to use. To make matters worse, I have two workshops and it gets to a point where I can't use either. That's when I have to spend a weekend cleaning up both shops, returning tools from one shop to the other and putting things away. I promise myself I'll put tools away after use, which lasts for about a week then the mess begins again.
It literally gets to a point where I'll use a tool, set it down, need it again and spend the next 10 minutes trying to locate it.
Having said that, in the house we have a place for everything and everything is in its place. So I get used to where everything is until one day I can't find anything. Reason being, the admiral will decide, maybe twice a year, that she wants to rearrange everything. She doesn't tell me that she has done it. So now, I have to ask her where everything is. In 6 months time I'll learn all the new locations and then she'll rearrange again. Maybe that's her way of ensuring that she will always be needed. 😍

Happy New Year to you also, Michael.
Yes, the instructions do not mention anything about a rabbet in the bow or stern posts. In looking back over the build and instructions, after installing and fairing the filler blocks bow and stern the instructions called for installing the real keel and bow/stern posts before beginning the planking. In hindsight I think I should have just installed the keel first and left the bow/stern posts for last. I think that would have allowed me to bring the planking past the bow/stern a little and then fair it back to the "backbone" leaving room to install the bow/stern posts. Lesson learned.
Yes the Jack Plane is nice. I've already given it a try and it cuts nicely. I think I now have Lee Valley's entire offering of miniature planes. I use the block and shoulder planes the most, especially for trimming planks.
Thanks for the compliment and for looking in.

Well after a 2 week stay in the hospital followed by 2 more weeks at home feeling like a slug with no energy and no ambition, I finally ventured into the ship yard to at least finish the ropes I had started to install before my unplanned surgery. I'm still restricted to no lifting over 10 pounds and no driving but I am getting outside for walks around the neighborhood.
I used some tiny doll clothespins I picked up in Michaels some time back to hold the rope in roughly the shape I wanted while the white glue I applied to the rings dried.
Photos follow:
Got a few goodies for Christmas. I picked up the Lee Valley Veritas miniature bevel up Jack Plane which works really well and it is only 5 inches long.
And my son decided I needed a few more kits to build so he got me a 1:700 and 1:320 destroyer kit.
the 1:700 Tamiya waterline series kit of the USS Cushng DD797
and the 1:320 Atlantis kit of the USS Forest Sherman DD931
I hope everyone had a nice Christmas and a Happy New Year to come.

Ryland Craze reacted to Zarkon in HMS Winchelsea 1764 by Jeff 1/48
Thank you everyone for the compliments!
To answer your question Jack, I did not use a layer of wax. I followed Chuck's instructions:
First I sanded with 220 sandpaper. I then sanded with 400 grit. I dont have 300 grit right now. I made sure not to touch the wood I was varnishing with my hands so no oils got on it. I then took a soft painter's brush and brushed off the sawdust. Lastly, applied 1 coat of wipe on poly with a foam brush. Waited 1 min, then wiped the access off with a lint free towel.
I noticed that it was important to do the last step because that helped to eliminate brush strokes. I realized it really doesn't take much wipe on poly to cover what I was varnishing.
Chuck's instructions are the best I have seen, and his tips make all the difference!
I hope to complete my building board this week so I can start placing the bulkheads

Ryland Craze reacted to CDW in Rafale by CDW - FINISHED - Hobby Boss - 1:48 Scale
The Hobby Boss Rafale goes together quickly with no major fit issues. Not perfect, but acceptable. The cockpit is simple, and all the photos I saw of it, everything is black.
I'm now ready to start laying down some paint. For the main finish colors of yellow, blue, and a little gray, I'll be using Mr. Hobby Acrysion paints with Mr Color leveling thinner.
I need to figure out these paint masks that come with the decal set...they are used to separate the gray from the yellow and black at the nose section.

A little crude, perhaps. However, I find it is part of the charm of these contemporary models. Neptune's face reminds me of Davy Jones in Pirates of the Caribbean!

Ryland Craze reacted to davec in Echo by davec - FINISHED - cross-section
Thanks everyone for the likes and kind comments. Greg - definitely agree that for anything more complicated that a sixth rate (or maybe even just one side of a sixth rate) this would start getting very tedious.
I've decided to add the gangway to the finished side. It turned out to be good practice with patterns to get all the angles and joints on the knees right, and will make this model a little bit different from the other finished echo cross sections.
Will hold on installing until the gun rigging is complete and the gun installed - don't want to make access to installing all the rings and ringbolts difficult. Hoping to get the breeching and gun tackles rigged and installed today before going back to work tomorrow.
Happy new year everyone!
Dave
