  1. I agree with Chuck and John. Get a wider sheet from the local hobby or craft shop and cut out the proper shape. It will look better and there will be less frustration. Russ
  2. The planking looks really good. Your prep work is really paying off. That is a good lesson for everyone. Russ
  3. Dave: A total restart? Wow. I do not see anything that tells me you should scrap the model. You can make the heart shaped deadeyes. With a little thought and practice, it would come together. Please do not make any hasty decisions. It is a great looking model so far. Consider staying with it. Russ
  4. Sam: Thanks for those too kind words. I am learning new things with every part I make. That is one of things I love about model building. Russ
  5. Congratulations on a great looking model. It is a work of art. Thanks for sharing the build. Russ
  6. Dave: Is it that the deadeyes are a bit crowded? Maybe stepping down to a smaller diameter deadeye will do the trick. Otherwise it looks very neatly done. Russ
  7. Michael: That sounds like good advice. I hope to one day be able to do a better job at this scale. Practice makes perfect they say. I will settle for pretty good. Russ
  8. Thanks. I am taking refuge in the scale limitations and a coat of paint. Seriously, I am hopeful that I can improve on this method as time goes on. It is always a learning process. All the same, I think the next one will be at the larger scale. That will make things a lot easier. Russ
  9. The deck looks fantastic. Excellent work. I wish mine looked half as good as this. Russ
  10. David It may take a few thin coats, but I will be able to get it done. In all of the contemporary pics of these schooners, the chainplates and lower deadeyes are always painted, so this is really the way to go. Russ
  11. Very nicely done. Great jig and the finished product looks like it has been there for a while. Russ
  12. Pete: She looks good. Everything looks straight and fair to my eye. Very nice work. Russ
  13. Elia: Thanks for those very kind words. It is appreciated. I am going to have another look at the deadeyes and chainplates later this evening and see what I think. Russ
  14. Another small update. I have decided on how to handle the deadeyes and chainplates. I am not yet happy with the results, but I will try to improve on them as I go along. In my defense, I can only say that the deadeyes are 1/16" diameter and the chainplates are .005" thick. It is all very SMALL. The cap for the assembly is only held in place with a strip of bamboo right now. All of what you see will get painted white. One deadeye still needs to be rotated a bit counter clockwise, but I will take care of that in due course. Russ
  15. Gary: That looks good. It adds a nice bit of detail to the model and now you know your cannons will not fly off their carriages during battle. Russ
  16. Frank: That looks good. There is going to be a good deal of twist in the sheer plank at the stern, as well as in the garboard plank at the bow. That is to be expected. One thing you should do is to extend the line of the frames down the center keel to the keel. That will help when it comes time to lay out the butts of the planks. Russ
