I agree with Chuck and John. Get a wider sheet from the local hobby or craft shop and cut out the proper shape. It will look better and there will be less frustration. Russ

Dave: A total restart? Wow. I do not see anything that tells me you should scrap the model. You can make the heart shaped deadeyes. With a little thought and practice, it would come together. Please do not make any hasty decisions. It is a great looking model so far. Consider staying with it. Russ -

Dave: Is it that the deadeyes are a bit crowded? Maybe stepping down to a smaller diameter deadeye will do the trick. Otherwise it looks very neatly done. Russ -
The deck looks fantastic. Excellent work. I wish mine looked half as good as this. Russ

Another small update. I have decided on how to handle the deadeyes and chainplates. I am not yet happy with the results, but I will try to improve on them as I go along. In my defense, I can only say that the deadeyes are 1/16" diameter and the chainplates are .005" thick. It is all very SMALL. The cap for the assembly is only held in place with a strip of bamboo right now. All of what you see will get painted white. One deadeye still needs to be rotated a bit counter clockwise, but I will take care of that in due course. Russ

Gary: That looks good. It adds a nice bit of detail to the model and now you know your cannons will not fly off their carriages during battle. Russ

Frank: That looks good. There is going to be a good deal of twist in the sheer plank at the stern, as well as in the garboard plank at the bow. That is to be expected. One thing you should do is to extend the line of the frames down the center keel to the keel. That will help when it comes time to lay out the butts of the planks. Russ

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
