Bob: I scraped the deck on my schooner. It came out so well, I did not anything else. Very lucky that. Russ

The stuff I have has a light brown color to it. It might be a slightly different species or a different part of the tree. I got mine years ago at a local furniture shop. Russ

I have had good results with Western Alder. It is very straight grained. It is a little soft, but it makes good looking spars. The mast on my cross section model is made out of alder as is the decking. The mast has been nice and straight these past ten years and the model has never been cased. Russ

I agree with Tom's method. Do all the rigging you can off the model. Russ

Very nice. I like the deck planking and the paint work. I think the master beam looks fine. Russ

If they pass below the rubbing strip, then they probably go under the rubbing strip. That is how it was done in many places here in the states. I learned that the hard way. Russ

The deck planking looks really good. I like the variety of colors from plank to plank. That gives a lot of character to the deck. Russ

Nice work on the timberheads. They came out very well. Russ -
Dave: Although only loosely associated with American privateering, the book Ben Franklin's Privateers by William Bell Clark is a good read and a well researched book. It covers privateers supervised by Franklin while he was our minister to the court of France during the Revolution. I have read this book and I can personally recommend it. Russ

I did a very quick search and one title seemed to stand out. Patriot Pirates: the privateer war for freedom and fortune in the American Revolution by Robert H. Patton, published in 2008. There are surely many more titles out there, but this is one that seems to catch the search engines. Russ

Len: Once you get the deck planked, the framing will not be an issue. So long as it holds the deck up that is what is important. Good work. Russ

If there is a pin in there, they will be much better than with just the glue. I try to pin or dowel as much as I can on small fittings like that. I think you good to go. Russ

The Color Buff
russ replied to wallyh's topic in Painting, finishing and weathering products and techniques
If you mean on the outer bulwarks, then the color would be yellow ochre. The inner bulwarks would most likely be red ochre. The yellow ochre was a dullish yellow while red ochre was a darker red color. Russ

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
