I usually make the oars first and then make the oar locks to fit them. That is, of course, if I know the diameter of the oars. Yours look very good. Nice work. Russ

Nice work. The color scheme is very interesting. A little bit of scratch building such as your breast hook is a good thing. This gives you a taste of scratch building and will show you what you can accomplish. Russ

The wales look great. The photo looking down the side shows a really nice sweet curve on all of them. Well done. Russ -
So far so good. I build models of local skiffs on a fairly regular basis and one of things that makes them so much fun is that they go together very quickly. Instant gratification. Russ

Great start. This will make a beautiful model. Just go slow, enjoy the process, and ask questions before rather than after. Russ

Kenneth: Consider using paper or tape for the black bands. It is easier to deal with than the metal bands and still makes a very good looking job. You can use black paper or tape or you can simply paint the paper or tape and then cut it into strips and stick or glue it on to the stocks. Russ

Probably only the breeching was left in place to secure the gun when not in action. The blocks for the various tackles could be removed. Russ

Model Shipways Willie L. Bennett Questions
russ replied to FlounderFillet5's topic in Wood ship model kits
Max: I have the booklet and the plans. They are very good and you should have no problem. The model build is very like how the actual boat was built. It is built upside down on a set of formers and then the framing is fitted inside the boat. Russ -
Excellent work. The deck fittings look very good. You did well in getting the parts fitted and looking shipshape. The deck views are really good. This is an impressive model. Shows what you can do with some skill and patience. Russ

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
