Mayflower by SawdustDave - Finished
russ replied to SawdustDave's topic in - Build logs for subjects built 1751 - 1800
The stern looks great. The choice of bamboo planking is interesting. I have seen bamboo used in other applications. If it works, go for it. Russ -

Nice work on the rigging. The 1/76 scale model is really looking good. You have made good progress on the 1/60 scale model. Once you get the keel, stem, and sternpost it will really begin looking the part. Nice work. Russ -
Scott: Good work. those head rails are worth spending some time on to get them right. Yours look good. Well done. Russ

Sewing the bolt rope on is a good call. I have made more than a few sails and it just looks better. Russ

Chine Repair help
russ replied to Philinnyc's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
Phil: In the long run, replacing the entire piece is going to better. I know there is the sense that you can repair it with some reinforcement and that might work, but the best way to handle something like this is to just replace the piece and make sure its right. It makes a better job and you will have the peace of mind knowing that it is solid in there. Russ -
Everything looks very neatly done. Nice work on the forward deck area. The anchors came out well. Russ

Dave: I would not tamper with any of the planking. Different shades in this kind of ship are a good thing. I any event, it is not uncommon to have a plank or two of a different shade. Leave it alone. Russ -
Len: That is a very good effect. Thanks for the explanation. Russ

Bob: The line between the masts is the spring stay. This takes the place of the main stay. There will probably be a turnbuckle at one end for tensioning, but I am basing that off my experience with Gulf Coast schooners. Russ

It looks like it is coming along. The line of the planks looks good. Nice work. Be careful to make sure you are getting everything shimmed so that the planks lay across the bulkheads without any dips. Check the last photo with the last plank on the second bulkhead. Might be the angle of the camera, but it looks like you might have a dip there. Russ

trunnels on margin planks?
russ replied to hamilton's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
I have seen where, in more wooden built ships, they used wood plugs over the counter sunk spike or nail and the grain of the plug ran the same as that of the surrounding deck planks. Russ -
trunnels on margin planks?
russ replied to hamilton's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
If you want to add trunnels that is fine. On a real deck, they are not really that visible. On a model it is a personal choice to add them or not. Russ -
trunnels on margin planks?
russ replied to hamilton's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
The trunnels would have been no more visible on the margin plank than anywhere else on the deck. Russ

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
