  1. British pre-dreadnought. around 1900: First guess: HMS Albion? Jan
  2. We had the Queen of Kent, quite recently. This one is of the same build, but a different funnel-configuration... Jan
  3. One of the english island ferries PS Waverly and her friens, Nice ships! Jan
  4. I see many similarities, but Norrskar is still with us (the original one). Although the one still sailing wasn't build under that name.... Jan
  5. If your ultimate goal is building a kit everyone else is doing...... When I started my Prins Willem-log (long, long ago) I couldn't find any other. Now there are many. Shouldn't I have started long ago, did others notice PW becuase of my log? I don't know. My idea is that you should buy a kit that is in line with your possibilities (although: skills will improve along the road, so you can try slightly above your level) But a victory as your first is perhaps a bit too far (although: many logs around) First of all you should buy a ship you are happy with, and would like to invest time and money in. I don't know this particular ship, but my impression is that kit-makers put nameless ships on the market, provided with a fake history (Friesland by Mamoli is a nice example: the ship never existed, but the story sounds great). Perhaps your kit is in the same category. Is that a problem? That fully depends on you. You still may like the ship as it is (even without the Nelson-connection. Perhaps the ship has a proper nelson-connection. Does that make the ship or the kit nices? That again depends on you.... The only thing you want to be sure of, is the technical quality of the kit. IN case there is a problem there, you may reconsider.... Jan
  6. asphalt? My first idea with asphalt is 'roads'. Do you have a link? Jan
  7. Actually, it's the other half of the twins: Soemba. But as these two are completely identical, it's up to you to post teh next one. Pic is taken somewhere in the east-indies, as she has her sun-gear installed on deck. Soemba and Flores were 1920-ies build gunsloops, in active service till after WWII, were they were involved in actions in the mediterranean and at D-day. Flores has been used as instruction vessel until the eighties. Jan
  8. Never realized these ships were as large as your living room she's an impressive build. Spray at the club, and afterwards detailing her there, or are you going to get her home every time after (re)spraying? Jan
  9. OK, just one to get the thread going again No heavy editing. Just removed the flag. Jan
  10. Real wood ? I like your plane: how large/small is it? Jan
  11. I do it the other way round: start with square, and first taper it. After tapering, round it. I found it easier to get hte right tapering while the piece of wood is still square. (but I didn't use a lathe or any other machinery.) Jan
  12. I only use it in 'extreme conditions': The railing on the top is a walnut-strip of 0.6 mm thich, and 2 mm wide, bending without ammonia tended to result in an unevenly curve. I soaked in it a 10pct ammonia solution for half an hour or so, and than I could almost make a knot in it without braking it. It did however, result in severe bleaching of the wood, and the structure of the wood deteriorated (after drying it was more brittle than before) Jan
  13. I don't know. Queens come and go (although, perhaps not in England. ) Jan
  14. some paddler on the Medway? one of the Queens perhaps? Jan
  15. PS Waverley and his friends Jan
  16. JB Weld: it's an epoxy glue: http://www.jbweld.com/product/j-b-weld/ (in case of confusion: try google ) Mamoli fabricates the thing with the gold shiny finish. The problem is more: how to get rid of it: The gold finish does not take all paints. Jan
  17. I've been looking at the ship quite a few days, and I;ve been through many white sruise ships. Can't stand it that I didn't find her. most famous cruise ship of her days, stunning white ship. Shouldn't be too difficult.... but......... Jan
  18. I know, but his yachts were names corsair, and corsair (even the largest) is smaller than this one. Jan
  19. are you kidding Jan
  20. Perhaps I'm looking on the wrong side of the globe....
  21. I think I'm close: corsair does look the right period and model, but she's too small. It's a yacht, we're looking for a yacht-like ship. Jan
  22. But I don't think it's Corsair IV.... Jan
  23. As soon as you start asking questions on "to redo or not to redo".. we all know what will happen. btw: did your woodworms miss one little hole? (in the upper left corner of the gunport) Jan
