  1. Thanks so much Patrick, Roadrunner and Sjors and the "likes". Your interest is always appreciated. Bob
  2. Rigging has begun. I've always enjoyed rigging and it was nice to be doing some again (It's been over two years since I had last done any). First, a few general matters. The standing rigging will all be Chuck's black line. I favor black for the deadeye lanyards and ratlines, as well. The arrangement and run of the lines is being taken from the rigging diagrams in AOTS Essex. The sizing of all of the lines is being taken from the proportional sizing data in Lees. Various details are also based on Lees. As I've done in the past, work on the standing rigging will begin on the lower mizzen and move forward. Now, to the work done so far. I've completed the burton pendants, shrouds, sheer poles and stay on the lower mizzen mast. I used very small wooden eyes from MS for the pendant thimbles. The mouse on the stay is simplified by using a shaped wooden bead. I have not served any of the lines because of the small scale, and don't intend to. Crowsfeet and ratlines will be done after the main and fore pendants, shrouds and stays are done. I apologize for the quality (or lack thereof) of the photos. I've never been good at photos of rigging and nothing seems to have changed. I'm now working on the lower main. Bob
  3. Thanks so much Thomas. The netting is one of those tasks that you do because you have to, not because you like to. Bob
  4. Thanks so much Nigel. Glad to have you back visiting, and I've been missing progress on your great builds. Bob
  5. Thanks so much Nils. You've guessed right. I've started on the standing rigging and should be posting some progress in a few days. Bob
  6. If you're counting votes, I'd go with the blackened bolts Grant. I like the look. Bob
  7. Thanks so much Rusty, Tim, Terry, Sjors and Rich and the "likes". Using the iron was Sam Cassano's idea, not mine. It works nicely. The netting is black Tim and needed no coloring. Rich, on previous models, I had made the cranes. This was definitely easier. Terry, the black paint I'm using now is an acrylic from Testors. It seems to be the same as the Pollyscale black that Testors discontinued. Bob
  8. The hammock netting has now been installed in the hammock cranes. The netting is the veil material from the kit. After cutting into oversize strips, I steamed it with an iron to remove the kinks and soften it. The strips were then glued to the crane bottoms and the wire at the top on each side, using medium viscosity CA. Final trimming was done using a small scissor and a razor blade. With completion of this item, work on the hull is now finished for the time being. The remaining hull work ( head, lantern, anchors, stern boat ), will be done during, or at the completion of, the rigging. I am about to begin the standing rigging. Bob
  9. Thanks so much Tim, Augie, Sjors and Mobbsie and also the"likes". I've used the wire before and it works much better for me. The netting is going in now Sjors. Bob
  10. A quick update. The hammock cranes have been installed. This work went surprisingly quickly and easily. I used the kit photo etched brass parts which are nicely done. These were glued into holes drilled into the rails. Rather than using rigging line for the guidelines at the top of the cranes, I use wire to provide added strength and stability. After the wire was glued in place, the assembly is remarkably strong. Now for the fun part -- fitting and attaching the netting in the cranes. Bob
  11. Thanks so much Thomas, Joe and Nils for the very kind thoughts and also the "likes". Bob
  12. Very nicely done. I have a soft spot for this kit, since it was one of the first that I built over 40 years ago. My only concern is about the lead based fittings that were used in the old kits. Apart from the potential problems with handling them, they have a possibility of deterioration over time ( I know from experience ). If you have the lead deadeyes, I would substitute wooden ones for them. Bob
  13. Thanks so much Grant and John and the "likes". Grant, even if I do another boat, no promise that it will be POF -- but who knows. Bob
  14. Ed: I never did the yard tackle pendants. The brace pendants all appear to have been rigged before I mounted the yards. See log p.2, post #29. Bob
  15. Thanks so much guys for all the very generous comments and the "likes". The boat was one of those fun things that makes some of the more tedious tasks worth doing. Bob
