A happy New Years to all. Thanks to one of your fellow modelers I have reopened the shipyard after many years. I was a member of Model Shipwrights and this previous site many years ago. Currently working on the Confederacy from Model Shipways. The talent I have seen on the current build logs is inspiring and daunting at the same time!

I retired 2 years ago so now have the time to indulge in my hobbies of leatherwork, woodwork, 1/32 scale WWI aircraft and now sailing ships. That is when I am not taking care of horses and fishing. How did I ever find time for making a living. My past ship builds are the Royal Louis and Royal Caroline. I have forgotten the makers of these two kits. Also a scratch built Gunboat Philadelphia.

Im looking forward to learning from this group and participating. All the best,

    Mark “Bossman”

    Greetings seamen!

I'm coming to this hobby from some experience with plastic models, and a single wooden build I've experimented with around 20 years ago (Amati Egyptian ship, didn't work well with the patience of a teenager 😁).

Aiming to learn and ask advice,I've already had the time to admire so many astounding projects on the forum.

    Wish you all calm seas!

Ok so to get ready for detailing the stern, here are a few images of the contemporary model.  There will be a few differences on ours based on the original draft.  Here are some close ups for reference.  Its pretty crude when you see it this close up and very dirty.  Ours will be more refined hopefully. I know Jacks figures are so much better than these.

    Hi

So I'm going to go ahead and start a build log of the Winchelsea, It will based off Chuck's designs with a few modifications of my own.
My main reason for building her is because she was once captained by Pellew and I intend in the future to build another of his ships,
a 1:48 fully framed model of the 44 gun Razee Indefatigable and it would be great to have both models together in the same scale.

I will not be planking in AYC as I have a goodly stock of Castello Boxwood and prefer it on a model of this size, also stem/stern framing
and keel will be of Swiss Pear with other wood highlights, maybe I will use the cedar on things that wont be seen easily and use the fruitwood
gel stain that Chuck has discovered to blend it with the boxwood to minimize usage.
I did purchase the Bulkheads and starter packages from Chuck and will certainly be buying his cast resin set when they are available.

The first job I have started while waiting for planking to dry on Pegasus is to make a new build board for this "BIG" ship, it will be approx
38" long without rigging and will need good support while framing, planking and finishing, so I decided to go and buy another 'cheap'
5foot workbench from Harbor Freight for $100 and modify it to suit. First it was put together and lift casters added so that I can quickly move
and spin the bench whichever way I need it. Second was to add 4-foot T-tracks and a nice large 1/2" MDF buildboad to the top. Third was to
install the keel and bulkhead former holders ready for the backbone. The 4 drawers are great for holding parts/tools and the bottom shelf for
materials which keeps an entire build together on one table instead of being spread about my workshop.

Here is looking forward to an interesting build and I should start on the bulkheads later this week.

Thanks Mark. The work has been finished. I just need to sort out the easiest way to get the enormous data files to those wishing to purchase them.  It will include some kick-*** videos as well! The complete works should be available in January. In the meantime here are a couple of photos of the model on the open seas.

Thank you everyone for the likes!!!
Thank you Chuck, I won't worry about the warping and will straighten it out on the build board.

    A small update,

I glued thr stem and false keel on the ply, and also put 1 application of the wipe on poly and described in chapter one.

I also added the nails as well.  I REALLY like how the wipe on poly looks on the cherry!

I am ready to build the building board!

I will give an update once its built.

    Happy new years!!!

What, with one thing and another, it's been a while, but at last here's an update on the 'Meteor'. The internal planking is finally finished and has been rough sanded - a big milestone in my mind.  Next job is to plank the stern and then get the external planking done before finishing off the inside of the hull.

Hello and a Happy New year to everyone!

I've been making some progress on the hull planking. The last two belts on the starboard side minus one strake are done. As tempting as it was to add the last strake I knew that I would still need a clamping area to adhere to when I start again on the port side. Clamping against the keel doesn't work since the angle of the clamp would pull the plank up and away from the bulkhead. Moving the clamp down five strakes changes the angle of the clamp just enough to hold the plank tight against the bulkhead.

I've added a few photos showing the planking detail both fore and aft.

All of the sanding so far has been done with Soft Sanders. They are hard foam shapes that you wrap with adhesive backed sandpaper which is supplied by the company. The sandpaper lasts forever it seems. I am using 180 and 320 grit. http://www.softsanders.com/products/wood. I find that these two shapes work well. I cut them into 3" to 5" lengths. They conform to the hull shape allowing for a smooth transition when sanding.

Finally managed to get back to the modelling bench.
    planking now ‘pencilled in’.

Then the first coat of Oak varnish

I have now started ‘roughing out’ the hull frame ready for the inner hull planking.

Thanks for looking more soon I hope.

JeffT reacted to Chuck in Discussions about chapter two - External hull planking for Winchelsea
I remember getting some very good advice from someone very close to me.   It has served me well over these many years.   I was given this advice on my honeymoon.   But yes , it also applies here as well.

Just a quick note about an observation I have made.  Some of you guys are moving along very quickly.....probably too quickly.....definitely too quickly.  I mention this as a cautionary tale.  It took me more than 4 months to plank my hull on both sides below the wales.  All of the planking took me almost six months.

I have observed that what took me months to complete has  taken some of you a mere week or two of time.   Planking is not something that can be rushed and  then have the results look neat and clean with a proper run.  Again this is a cautionary friendly word of advice as I see many of you about to start planking below the wales.  Slow down and consider each plank as an individual project.  If you get a gap between planks....tweak it so the gap goes away.  If you see dips and a poor run of planking develop....slow it up and try to correct the run of planking with your next strake or remove the offending planking and do it again.  There is absolutely no reason to rush through the hull planking.  Its just too much fun to rush through!!!   Planking I mean...

Remember that the planked hull is the largest visual element of your model.   Hull Planking that is rushed can sink the appearance of an otherwise wonderfully built model.  That should be printed on a fortune cookie!!!!    It will detract from everything else you do on the model no matter how well done it ends up being.   Just s friendly word of advice.....slow down and enjoy the ride.

Remember, the bottom isnt painted.  You could plate it however if need be.  Or slow down and try to tackle just two or three strakes a day.   Probably two.  Try and slow down...best advice I was ever given.

Thank you for your kind words and all the "likes", dear friends.
The cannons are finally placed inside the model; all are movable and able to adjust in height. Now the Royal Katherine looks much more like a warship.

Have a Happy New Year 2020 and plenty of health, love and joy.
