garyshipwright got a reaction from FrankWouts in HMS Winchelsea 1764, by Gary B
Well I have finally pulled the plug and decided to start a build log on building the Winchelsea while also working on my 74. Why some will ask, some times it's nice when you don't have to make all the parts and piece's, but she still have a lot of parts and pieces to make along with the ones that Chuck makes for her. Some call her a kit but I would say 50 50, and to me it still takes as much skill and understanding to build her as well as a 74. May take a little time to get her up and running but am working on that. I can't seem to find the answer to how long , wide and thick does the build board need to be? I came across that the hull length which is 38 inches so a length of 42 to 46 inches would be just about right. Tomorrow I plan on going to have the plan's blown up to a 100 percent which should help me figure out the size of the build board along with other question I have, and then I can start cutting and make the bulkheads along with the her Bulkhead former. Glad to be aboard. Gary

Well guy's after a couple of weeks I finally finished the build board and the Center keel. The plywood for the bulkheads should be here tomorrow and I can get started on them. Between the two, the Winchelsea and the Montague, they should keep me busy.

The first gun has been temporarily installed. Looks like that rear truck needs a little straightening!

The belaying pins are now installed in their shroud deflectors. That's a term I had never read before but that's what they're called according to Markquardt. Perhaps they're called pin rails only when affixed to the inner bulwarks. The deflectors have grooves filed on the outboard edge for the shrouds and lashings inboard and are surprisingly strong once attached. At any rate, I was able to hone my lathe technique to turn out consistent pins. Next it's on to ratlines. Perhaps Archjofo would fly in from Germany to show me how he successfully duplicated actual practice when securing them to the outer shrouds. Personally. I believe he used Photoshop as this is not humanly possible to do.

I fit the rails to the bulwarks and clamped them in place. I then drove a couple of little yellow nails to keep them aligned during the glue up. I used 15 minute Bob Smith Industries Epoxy. The photos show the curvature of the rails upward and inward moving aft. There is no poly on the exterior of the model, nor on the main deck or inboard bulwarks. That's why the colors look so washed out! The poly will resuscitate the wood!

In order to locate accurately, the main beam of the back half of the upper deck is laid (not yet glued) . It provides a reliable guarantee for the smooth completion of all the internals in the later period.
