Locked down here in Portugal as well (and btw, they  are talking of putting back into use an old law that punishes hoarding of 6 months in prison - fortunately, the Portuguese people are civvic, compliant to rules, and disciplined for most of them, which cannot necessarily be said of some expats living in the country).


    In fairness, I am very concerned about my business in France, which I had to lock-down as well. We changed and resumed our operations after a few days, because we still had customers to serve, some of them companies providing vital supplies, but basically the business is down 80+ %. Very worrying for the future, as I have 9 employees depending on this business, not to mention the shareholder - me - who does not get unemployment benefits if things come to the worst ...


    Anyway, although I realise the issue of young kids is old memory for the vast majority of the members, a few seconds of a light-hearted wink :

I have been away for a couple of weeks (focusing on other projects like having a house built, until everything - including my own company - came to a grinding halt), but the feast for the eyes (well, mine at least, as I can imagine some of the strain on yours sometimes ;) ) on returning is always so great !


    Picking up my jaw, my chair, the popcorn and waiting for more :)

    Yes, but which one is it really ? The first one, or the second you bought because you could not find the first, or the third because both the first and second of the same had disappeared 😉 ? That the one who has not multiples of the same tool throws the first nail at me 😁 ...



  4. My workbench (used essentially for 1/32 plastic aircraft models) used to shrink to the usual free one-square-foot.


    I have invested in Hobbyzone (hoobyzone.pl) modules, and my modelling life was changed. Now, part of the discipline in modelling is to end up any session (admittedly not as frequent as I could wish) with a cleaning and putting back tools in their right place.


    It makes modelling so much more enjoyable, especially when you start every time with a clean (and orderly) bench ;) .



  5. It’s great to read that efforts to explain issues, and educate people about implications and impacts of certain behaviours have paid off. It also shows that, when informed politely and quietly, a lot of people will react positively and in good faith. So much more positive than pretending issues don’t exist, or escalading fights on social media.

    Heartfelt congratulations to Chuck for his efforts, and to Tom for changing his business practices, and Mr Berti for entering into these negotiations.

    As a side note, I went to visit CAFmodel’s website after this post. I could see that the pages linking to the Ancre-based models are inactive atm. I also saw an aircraft page, with a 1/32 SG-38 wooden model : most likely I will order this one sooner rather than later, and would never had considered such an order before. I hope that Tom will conclude from my little experience that behaving fairly can bring additional business ;) !


  6. In my eyes, the J-class is still the epitome of racing yachts, and you have rendered true justice to this classic among the classics. She looks sleek, beautiful, racy, even sexy ... A master achievement you can be proud of.


    If I may venture a small criticism, the cradle you have chosen, whilst justified for stability reasons, looks a bit « heavy » and spoils a little the fantastic lines of the hull.


    A fantastic result nevertheless. Well done !



  7. Afonso, I am nothing like the masters here, who will certainly have better advice than me.

    But if you are looking for Spanish or Portuguese ships of the XVI/XVII Century, I would suggest you look at one of the Colombus triplet (Santa Maria / Nina / Pinta). I believe they exist in kits, are extensively researched with some great books on them,  and still are not too complex, especially the smaller ones ....

    If you can find one, but they are scarce and awfully expensive, I also believe there is an Imai (plastic) kit of the Mataro, one of the most iconic ship models of Spain (it is a genuine XV or XVI Century ex-voto. Maybe not an accurate representation of a real ship, but the kit reproduces a famous model 😉 )

    Ans just as well, I appreciate your openness to share techniques. I can say I have learnt a lot reading this thread.


    As for the choice of subject, I just love pre-dreadnoughts, and believe the Russian fleet was the most homogenous fleet of pre-dreadnought ships, in terms of appearance and looks. Nothing like the French "Flotte d'échantillons", nor the various experiments the US and British Navies were doing at that time, which resulted in different-looking ships in the time-span. Varyag was certainly a handsome-looking ship.


    I will continue to follow your build with trepidation.

    Yes. My bad ! Just my limited command of English (I’m French, in case you did not get the hint from my name - nobody’s perfect 🙄).

    Welding is one step beyond soldering. Mind you, some railroad modellers use spot-welding techniques on scratchbuilt brass locos ... just like in your ordinary car factory.
