  1. Sjors, Thanks for staying and Anja thanks for cleaning up; it must have been an interesting endeavor! I see you are back to practicing your "String Theory." She looks great, I will try not to PM you too much wen I get to the rigging stage myself. Sam
  2. Mark, I dont think post count is important to most, I know it isnt to me. Keeping MSW alive an well however is. Looking forward to your next post. Sam
  3. Ron, Really like your capstan. You are making me think I will need to change the kit supplied on my build with a scratched one. your photos will come in handy. Sam
  4. Russ, Z, thanks, I did try a lighter btw, Not sure what law of thermodynamics I demonstrated, but it was mildly exciting. Looks like beeswax is in my future. Its gonna be a couple of days more than likely, I just finished a 20 hour shift, relaxing with an adult bevarage and MSW before crawling off to bed for a couple of hours. Sam
  5. Robyn, Mark, thanks. Use the wax in a solid form or heat it? I have used beeswax cut with thinner for furniture I imagine it will soak in better that way. Will the wax work like rosin to help set knots? Sam
  6. Harley, the video is the instructions, sorry, I didnt make that clear. I have yet to try it, but my plan is to clamp rings, hooks. blocks etc parallel to the axis and rotate, it works for flies so in my mind at lest it stands to reason it will work for these items also. That being said, I have been wrong before. Grant, that photo was taken on a one to one macro. IE; when you are at your closest focusing distance what you see in the view finder is life size, so you could say that is "extreme" macro. Just for he record in case there was any misunderstanding, the rope that came with the kit is nothing compared to Chucks rope. I cant imagine using kit rope in the future. Sam
  7. Hi Grant, That is Chucks Syren rope. It is FAR better than the kit supplied and the fuzzies only really show up under a macro lens. And yes very fair price and great turn around. Harley, I read the instructions today - fancy that - and the head is adjustable so the rotating feature may work after all. Sam
  8. Harley, Had a few minutes last night to "play." this is what I came up with: There is lot of room for improvement here, but it was really nice to just clamp the rope and go rather than trying to find a way to use tweezers to hold it. Next time i will rig something like this off ship. I would have been so much easier. Ah well, first build and all.... Anybody have advice on getting rid of the fuzzies? EDIT- I think Mobbsie is correct here, basic is best. So far I am not seeing the advantage of the rotating feature - time will tell though. what would be great I think is a gimbal/ball joint to move the head around. Sam
  9. John, Ron, Thanks. That is what I expected, but all I have here are drawings and they show darker seizings, I was assuming that was for illustration but wasnt sure. I am assuming that applies to all operable rigging? Thanks again Sam
  10. Work has been keeping me busy these last few weeks, I have had a bit of time to play but not much. I have shaped and fit up my Bits as the instructions call them, yesterday I was able to chop the mortices where they will go and stain them - pictures tonight or tomorrow. As I mentioned earlier I received my rope from Chuck. I started rigging the ropes for the gun ports - I should have rigged the rings off the ship - this is more difficult than I imagined it would be. I have re-rigged them several times now. My first attempt I just knotted them and didnt look right so off they came, I tried seizing with the smallest of Chucks rope and that looked WAY too bulky. Do it again. During al of this I was lurking and asking questions in the rigging forum. Bought a fly tying vice and some 80wt thread. Last night I tried it out and so far I like what I have, lots of room for improvement still but I am going in the right direction. A question, What is the best way to get rid of the fuzzies? as good as chucks rope is I still have fuzzies. Edit - My clumsy fingers hit "post" instead of "more reply options" Need more coffee! My early attempts, not bad but bulky and the wrong color seizing Bought a fly tying vice, thats helping. Not bad, room for improvement. How do I get rid of the fuzzies? Sam
  11. Joe, If you like Lee Valley you will love the Japanwoodworker.com or TraditionalWoodworker.com, very similar. Sam
  12. What kind of rope would have been used to seize rope on running rigging? Tarred/pine pitch or natural? I am rigging the gun port ropes on my stern ports and not sure which is correct. Sam
  13. Druxey, I cant agree more, I have a box full of cheap files rasps and rifflers. Very few of the cheap files I bought in my younger years were worth the packaging they came in. There is a time and a place for cheap tools, but you cant go wrong buying the best you can afford. Sam
  14. Harley, I just received mine thursday and you are correct, its just the vice, no bobbin holder. So far all i have been able to do is look at it; work is keeping me very busy. I was going to experiment and see what worked for me, most likely following Mobsies pictures, maybe coming up with techniques of my own, dont really know. I had in the back of my head to possibly use the rotating feature to wrap my seizings; I dont know if that will work or not, the tip of the vice is not centered to the axis of rotation. I am hoping to get some bench time this evening or tomorrow to play if work will cooperate. In the mean time it looks like it is off to the tackle shop for me to get a bobbin holder - scary prospect there, tackle shops are like a tool or candy store for me. Sam
  15. Like Darren I am a huge fan of these saws. You really cant beat them. This place is great if you like Japanese tools and if you ever get to the san francisco areea you should check out their store sam http://www.japanwoodworker.com/Category/13166/Fish-%28Deba%29.aspx
  16. Harbor freight has some that or OK. Not great just ok but cheap. sam
  17. Mark, learner, I don't know how small you want but there are these. aircompressorsdirect.com/product-images/4429_Alt_1.jpg You can get them electric powered also Sam
  18. That seems like a very reasonable price for a handmade file/rasp. At work our sculpters have hand made Italian rasps and rifflers that run upwards of $75.00 each. My set from micro mark was about $25.00 iirc and I have been very pleased with them. Sam
  19. Kiwiron, the optivisor is great, we have a couple at work. At home for ship building I have been using a Megaview Pro LED. http://www.ottofrei.com/MegaView-Pro-with-LED-Light-and-3-Lenses-Plus-Mono-Lens.html I like having shadowless light right where I am working. I think OptiView has a lighted version also. Sam
  20. I wish I had the time and energy to yard sale! I probably could have saved my self some money, I just ordered a couple of used Danvice - $72.00. I know I could have gone to Ebay, but...... this place seemed to be the one. http://www.btsflyfishing.com/ When I told Al the owner what I was going to be using it for, he got real quiet and said "Thats a first, now I have heard everything" He was actually kind f tickled that I was going to use a fly vice for this. Thanks again Mobsie Sam
  21. Mark looks great! Is it really possible for her to "explode" when you remove from the frame board? Chain Wale is a new term for me; is that the wale the chain plates are anchored to? Sam
  22. Q, you read the same article I did. I am looking at a couple of those, havent decided which one yet. sam
  23. Mobbsie, thank you!! Thats great. Evidently there are two type, rotating and non rotating, is there an advantage to either? Sam
  24. Mr sjors, the Ratline King!! I go away for a couple of day and you change builds, add a whole bunch of pages and even pictures! Woo Hoo! Very nice. And the picture of the two together look great too. Sam
