If I'm not mistaken, the Constitution has steps on the bowsprit.

Seems like a convenient thing to have on a large ship..

If you will notice, the number and set-up of those stays of your 50 gun ship, appears identical to Petersson's frigate.

As far as belaying, taking the natural lead of the line to the closest pin, while avoiding interference with other lines, will probably not get you in trouble with any Admiral who may view your work.

I think it depends on the model, and the desired effect.

I like a wood finish rather than paint, and with this in mind, using various ( scale? ) plank lengths, creates an interesting look, that might not be as
    effective when painting.

With a machine like the Domanoff, where you are limited to  four strands, you may have to use your results ( 2,3,4 ) to make larger rope...

It should have some details regarding the rigging of the type you are working on..

Browse through some of the excellent build logs, and click through to the rigging parts.

Trying to take you through this, question by question, is going to result in a virtual build log, using diagrams and
technique that has already been provided.

Here is a good start from a log I suggested to you earlier..

Search for ' Rattlesnake ' and you should see several logs of the Mamoli kit, with lots of pics at various stages.

I find bamboo to be the go-to material for small wooden spars. The long and tough fibers that run along its length behave like rebar in cement. It resists breaking from any angle, unlike most woods that will fail along the grain on one side or another. Unlike most other woods, you can keep on reducing diameter to a very thin, yet still resilient, thickness. I find tapering bamboo spars to be so easy I'm surprised anyone feels it presents any difficulty. I've had success tapering with a small block plane and/or via sandpaper. If you have never tried tapering with your spar chucked into a drill and using sandpaper on it while it spins you have missed some great fun. Wear eye protection. Drawplates I have never had success with, they are expensive so I only ever purchased one from Micro Mark years ago and it was a lemon. Perhaps there are more effective ones out there but I'm not inclined to pay to find out.

I know I am going a bit in reverse here, but I managed to rig the yards and complete all of the rigging today.  I will have more detailed photos as I sort them out but since I havent posted in a while I thought I would show the model as it stands now.   All that remain to be done are the anchors and buoys and the entry way stanchions.  Plus a little clean up.  But I still try to sneak in some model time even though it has been crazy nuts lately.

The yards were made from square stock....taken to octagon and then the outsides tapered and rounded off.   Once painted black the blocks and stirrups and horses were added along with the other half of the sling.

The same was done to the topsail yard.  I will have plenty of more detailed images of the rigging once Mike drops by with his camera.   He doesnt know this yet but I plan on asking him to help me photograph this stuff.  Photographing rigging with a point and shoot is impossible.

Anyway here are the photos.  The flag is just a test and I am living with it for now as I try new things.   I like it but I dont know how much.   Its printed on tissue paper for wrapping gifts with my inkjet.   Then its sprayed thoroughly with flat clear fixative.   It is soaked pretty good and molded before it completely dries.  This stiff may be too thin though...but lets see what others think once they see it in person.  It does shape nicely with various size paint brush handles.
