Ponto got a reaction from hollowneck in Amati 1:64 HMS Victory - LATEST NEWS
There are few interesting kits pending for imminent release but this Amati product looks like it should be the flagship of kits. I hope it ends up meeting with every ones expectations once it hits the market. It will be a monster of a box and keep many patrons busy for some length of time. I hope to be one of those patrons.

    Reworked some of the engine.
When I first got this back I had visions of turning it into Chitty but then thought I would check out the different versions this engine was used in and decided on the boat tail version.
What's funny is the first guess a lot of people made on what I was doing with it was Chitty (I thought turning it into Chitty was quite original and no one would think of that)
I quite liked the idea so my question is (I dont know how to do a poll) which would you like to see most the red boat tail Bentley or Chitty.

In the years since I built this kit I like to think I've got better at weathering engines realistically so this ones coming out to have a do over.

I just use the "rack of the eye" when doing the rats, I don't have a gauge that I keep too or a measure behind the shrouds....just clove hitch and go...starboard side completed....Victory and Greyhound look on in the back ground.

    Thank you Chuck;
A small update. I have finished both wales.  The first plank at the bow was narrowed to match the lower planks (to be added) rather than the black strake.

As Chuck mentioned, at this point it starts to look like a frigate.

I have used a combination of black water-based wood stain and water-based wood conditioner (1/3 + 2/3) six layers; sanding in between (1000 grid) to paint the wales and get a satin translucent black color reminiscent of ebony.  It has just about as much reflective of light.  Hope the pictures show it.
    Best,
    G

And currently I am adding set and furled sails to my Clipper, Glory of the Seas.  Paper is IMV convincing at this scale as well....1/96.
    Here are several images.

Ponto got a reaction from mtaylor in Which Brand of Wooden ship model kit is better or worse.....? Take a poll and answer a few multiple choice questions.
I can appreciate the input gathered from such a poll but I'm rather puzzled by it as well.  In order to answer the questions accurately I would think that a person would have to have experience with each brand. I can vouch for the kits by Corel as  good quality and with decent plans but lacking detailed instructions. Whether or not these are better or worse than other brands, I cannot justify in saying since my experience extends only to a couple other manufacturers.

I'm guessing this is to be on a whole new level of complexity for a kit.  Looks promising.

Interesting discussion about decals. In my experience decals require very specific techniques, including correct preparation of the surface, and various chemicals to obtain really good results; and that is on plastic/styrene. I don't know how decals would behave on wood. Larger decals can increase the difficulty in my experience, and the potential for error. Chuck is spot on, poorly applied decals look awful and are the first thing the eye will focus on.
I think that paper, card, PE, others metals, resin, plastic and decals can all have a place enhancing wooden scale models. It will be very interesting to see what Chris eventually decides.

    Hello,
I'm still unclear on how to secure the lanyards.
In the meantime I have dealt with another detail.
It concerns the travelers for the jib boom and the flying jib boom.

It was seven months ago that I first started to plank the hull below the wales. I'm happy to say that it is now all done. The last few days were spent sanding out the hull planking. I find that I can see dips, rises and other types of fluctuations better when the lights are off and I just use the daylight coming through the window. Sounds crazy, but it really accentuates things better than my indoor lighting. I added the stern post as well. No finish has been applied though that will be done as soon as I re-paint any scuffed areas on the wales and cleanup the keel and knee with a light sanding.
