Frank Thanks for the kind words. Carl, hey sure do. Each admiral is, “She who must be obeyed”. Bedford, LOL. Bob

The advantage of a wood finish is no one will ever say, “Oh, a fiberglass boat.” She looks sweet and a white stripe will be just right. Bob

Fine work. She’s coming along nicely. In the background I see a block with a “C” clamp buried in it. What is it for? Tell me about it. Bob

Thanks to all who added notes and to all the likes. It’s so nice to have friends who understand what it takes to build a wood boat and appreciate your work. Tonight I will take the Lettie to the local scale club and answer questions from the plastic car and airplane modelers. For those who were specific: S.os, sorry about the bright brass. The admiral said, “Make it black and gold.” So gold (brass) it is. Bedford, sorry but you’ll have to do it, but I sure would like to be there when she is finished and sailing. She’ll be a beauty. Bob

Thanks for the answers. That is what I suspected but some pictures caused confusion. Thanks again Bob

I’m getting ready to rig a fishing schooner and have a question about the gaff topsail. When coming about was the topsail tack lifted over the gaff halyard lines or was it left to windward? In pictures the tack is usually to the lee of the gaff halyard lines but in some pictures the fore topsail tack will be on one side and the main topsail tack will be on the other. When rigging should there be a second tack line going up over the gaff halyard lines so the tack can be moved from one side to the other? Bob

The deck is almost done. I apologize for not taking pictures of the parts as I built them. I tend to get carried away with the build and don’t think of pictures until it’s too late. I still need to put pin rails near the dead eyes and cut the samson or pawl post to the right height. I also need to add supports for the deck boat. The mackerel boats towed a seine boat which was around forty feet long but they also carried a dory on deck. Bob They put braces on the corners of the skylight to keep the lines from snagging. Apparently they were not concerned with the smoke stack.

Hello Carl, Pete and Omega1234, Thank you all for the complements. Pete, a day of sailing would be fun but I’ll have to ask the admiral, it’s her boat. Bob

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
