JesseLee reacted to Beef Wellington in HMS Jason by Beef Wellington - Caldercraft - 1:64 - Artois-class frigate modified from HMS Diana 1794
Thanks everyone as always for continued interest....
Jim - not going to be able to put canon rigging off much longer....ugghh
The area around and immediately aft of the pumps is really quite congested and requires some planning. The main jeer and topsail sheet bitts were scratched, parts from the kit look a little oversize to my eye. Pillars were made square in section after studying as many pictures as I could find, these seem to be a mix between square and round, but I don't think my turning skills are up to making round ones. Side blocks and fake sheaves were also added.
For the aftermost stanchions, I followed the AOTS diagrams which shows these to be of smaller dimension. All of these items will require some final finishing. The capstan step was cut out of a single piece of 2mm boxwood and 'joints' faked by scoring with a knife and filling with pencil lead. This took a while with just hand tools and I couldn't help but think of a toilet seat from the end result! These details will be visible but obscured so forcing myself not to be too fussy. The base of the capstan itself as sanded back to the pawl rim which sits in the hole in the capstan step. (This requires a lot more finishing to get the surface to be acceptable)
Pictures are hopefully self explanatory. I've shaped some box for the elm tree pump shafts and I've placed an offcut just to get a sense for positioning....
And to mystery that's been puzzling me for a while (and Rob alludes to in his Ethalion log), how does the placement of the pump brakes reconcile in the this workspace in such close proximity to the capstan and companion?
I seem to recall reading 'somewhere' that some stanchions were removeable which would explain the location around the capstan - once both sets were removed this would make this workable. In later ships, these seem to have been replaced by hinged iron columns which makes a lot of sense. if anyone could corroborate that would be much appreciated! Lastly, given the pump brakes also extend to this area, these would really be a permanent accident waiting to happen at the foot of the ladder to the quarterdeck which must have received quite a bit of use. I can't find any reference to this, bit I have to suspect that pump brakes were removeable, and unshipped when not in use. On the Artios class, there is a set forward, and 2 sets aft - in normal seagoing routine I would speculate that not all banks would have been needed, but could easily have been placed in the event or expectation of an emergency. The last photo below from Victory seems to show exactly this, and it also makes the square section joining each brake much more functional. Again, if anyone can point me to sources would be much appreciated!

I finished all the staysail rigging before starting on the yards. My camera broke so I'm trying to use my phone. Having a lot of trouble with the phone and laptop communicating with each for some reason and it is about to make pull my hair out. The phone does seem to take better shots than the camera did, it's just a lot more trouble transferring them over.

I finished installing the hammock cranes.Very tedious and time consuming because the parts are so small and fragile. The holes on the cranes are so small I could only get a very small gauge wire instead of string through the holes.
Next I'll work on installing the nets which in the past is like putting toothpaste back in the tube.

Fortunately we have not lost power even though a lot of people around me have. Good time to work in the shipyard. Hearing the driving rain and howling winds makes me imagine what it was like to be at sea on way back then in such a violent storm.
Anyway, made the Gaff and the Boom. I have done as much pre-rigging as I can before they are attached. The instructions said you can paint them or not- your choice. I was going to leave them with a light golden oak stain but had to do some patch-up work on the Gaff where it got some wood marred and gouged from an accidental drop on the floor and got stepped on. At this point I saw that the paint would completely hide this so black they now are. This also hid where I had to re-glue both jaws because of the very poor wood supplied in the kit. I wish I had made them from better wood to start with.
Completed all the rigging for these two. Found it much more difficult to get into the tight places to tie off to the belaying pins than it used to be for me. My kit was missing the beads for the parrels but I had plenty from earlier builds.

Great to see you back Jesse. Model looks great as usual.
When I use my phone I always attach them to an email and email them to myself and open them on my pc. You don't have to connect the 2 devices.
Maybe that can work for you as well.
Peter.

JesseLee reacted to Mirabell61 in Eagle of Algier 1753 by Mirabell61 - FINISHED - 1:48 - Chebec - Nils Langemann
Today I started building the Chebecs casing....
it will be a bit larger than usual (width) due to the sticking out oars on stb. side, and the ships boat on the port side.
The display place will be swapped with that of the Gorch fock, momentarily in my hobby room, which I will place upstairs instead. I have foreseen an old cast iron foot base of a former heritage sewing machine for Gorch Fock`s new stand-on support...., will have to exchange the glass plate against a sturdy wooden base for safety reasons...
Nils
cutting the edge pieces of the baseplate
only little (minimum) clearance to the stb. glass side. Will apply cherry wood stain afterwards, like my other casings have
and to the port oar of the boat
This will be the new stand support for the "Gorch Fock" model`s glasscase. Need to exchange the glass plate against a 1200 mm long wooden plate in adequate thickness

JesseLee reacted to Tom E in US Brig Niagara by Tom E - Model Shipways - 1:64 Scale
Evening,
Admittedly, I haven't been in the shipyard as much as I want to be.
Life gets in the way. Nothing bad, just prepping for the winter.
Get the truck inspected, serviced,,,blah blah blah....chores.
I made some progress on the Main mast.
It starts with the Octagon.
I did much better on this one than the Fore mast.
Squared up the top portion.
I finally stripped that orange like paint off the Forecastle Hatch.
Stained it an "Early American".
Looks soooooo much better.
I also finished the Galley grating as well.
I chose the "Early American" stain for the Forecastle hatch because it was close to the color of the Gratings supplied.
Don't know if its right, but I like it.
Just as I wanted, Its just a tick or two darker than the deck for some contrast.
On a side note,
We had our first snow event!
Local ski resorts are starting to open up. There's a lot more snow in the mountains than what we got in town.
