Hi Vaddoc I'm sorry about the bits of overspray and the bleeding of the red from the waterline. The important thing is that they're all fixable and that it it's only a minor setback. The hull itself is looking great, and it's a credit to you. All the best Patrick

Hi Nils I agree with Dennis. You're a lucky chap to have such nice work areas. They make my dining table look very inadequate! All the best! Patrick

Hi Nils Exemplary metal work. I find it hard to even file a brass rod, and yet you're able to fashion such a beautiful and complex propellor as if it was second nature! Outstanding stuff! Cheers Patrick

Beautiful crisp, clean and precise rigging, Cristiano! I also have to say, just how nice the sails are. They're beautifully made and they have a certain air of realism about them Nicely done! Cheers Patrick

Hi Nils At last! I've been wondering when you were going to start this build log after mentioning your intention to build this super liner in one of your previous posts. Please allow me to take centre stage. I can easily spend the next 2.5 to 3 years following and enjoying your progress. All the best! Cheers Patrick

Hi Pete I was really curious to see what the Montgomery 15 looked like, so I googled it. Is this it: http://www.montgomeryboats.com/mont15.php If it is, you've got good taste! She's got heaps of character and the clinker hull will be a nice challenge. I look forward to seeing you pull it together! Cheers Patrick

Hi Mike I'm just catching up on your most recent posts and I must say how fine your frames, keel and stem pieces are looking! Really nice. Good luck with the rest of the build. It'd be great if you could also sneak a few photos of your full sized boat as well! Cheers Patrick

Hi Pete Congratulations, Pete. She's a beauty and you should feel justifiably proud of yourself. Will you be keeping this one, or passing it onto a new owner? Cheers Patrick

Really, really nice, Pete! I'm really enjoying your updates and I gotta admit that if you finish her tomorrow, I may have withdrawal symptoms! Those North Sails also look pretty spiffy. All the best Patrick

Hi everyone Many thanks for all of your comments and Likes! Tonight, I decided to see what Symphony's hull would look like with a matt coloured under hull. So, I promptly taped it up and gave the under-hull a quick coat of matt paint. I'm not totally committed to the colour I chose, so I may decide to change it later on. But, on the whole, I don't think it looks that bad. I also put the drop keel in, ensuring that it can be retracted into the hull, much the same as the real ship's drop keel. Here are the photos. Cheers Patrick

Hi Vaddoc Nappies and lullabies will always take precedence over our hobbies, but it's still nice to be able to get back to the models once in a while. Having said that, your ship's coming along really nicely! It's amazing what a bit of putty and primer can do to transform a hull. Another thing that has struck me, is just how big the hull is. Perhaps that may in part be due to the light colour of the hull now, but nonetheless, she's a beauty. Well done. Cheers Patrick

Hi Ben Sure thing. Here goes! Congratulations on reaching this milestone. All your hard work has paid off big-time! As for manoeuvrability, all I can say is 'wow', the use of the helicopter system for the oars certainly gives you a great range of options for controlling the oars. Almost a stroke of genius! You gotta be feeling pretty darn chuffed now! Cheers Patrick

Hi Mark It's nice to be "special", but I'm sure that getting crook is the last thing you, or, your Mother had in mind! Seriously though, I'm glad to hear that you're over your illness and can get back to your model. I must say , also, that I was wondering what had happened to your updates...guess that explains things! Very nice progress, so far, too, by the way. All the best Patrick

Hi Bob and Pete That's an interesting point you make, Bob. My goal is the same, as well. In my case, something which may have bugged me in the previous model is something that I'll give particular attention to trying to improve upon in the next one. It may not always work out successfully, but, at least my heart's in the right place! On the whole, as long as I can look back and be satisfied that my skills and abilities are improving with each successive model, then, I'm a happy Chappy. All the best Patrick

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
