Hi, There is no gold coating. What you see is the raw photo etched pieces. The boats are unfinished castings.

Silkspan is what stick-and-tissue airplane modelers cover their models with. Perhaps a hobby store might carry it. Here is a photo of Sultana with silkspan sails.

So after much thinner, rubbing, scraping and sanding, a coat of primer, more sanding, and a spray tan, the result is much more pleasing.

I believe they are called mast trucks, and would have a sheave in them for the flag halyards. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truck_(rigging)

A Dremel with a cut-off wheel will cut the brass nicely. I have seen them cut straight across, but also seen them cut at an angle to match the hull. Take your choice. Nic

Rather than mask off, I decided to freehand paint the deck. It will need a second coat, and then I'll touch up the bulwarks.

Pin Vice Help Needed
MrBlueJacket replied to Ed Gibbons's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
The pin vise we sell is good for drills down to #75. Smaller than that I use a Dremel universal chuck. -

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
