Elijah, nice job with your hull. Take your time and make sure it looks right to you. You'll be doing a better planking job if you're happy with your base. And remember to have fun; it's a hobby. ;):)

Thanks for the compliments everybody! I might as well double check everything, what harm would that bring? If it makes the ship better, it is good!

Your hull looks great Elijah.  Now if you decide to plank it the job will be easier.  You can use thinner planking if you can get it.  Easier to bend and flex. with more support from a solid glue surface.  When I was working on my Latham hull I was able to plank it with   i used 1/64 cherry and it was a dream.  Once smoothed and sealed I painted the hull. .5 mm will work as well.

Thank you! I am going to be using some cherry veneer, and it appears to be 1/64-1/32 or somewhere about .5 millimeters. It should be fun!

The sternpost is installed, and the outer bulwarks are shaped. Next is deck shaping and inner bulwark shaping! After that, planking!

Looking fantastic!  As you work on the inner bulwarks and deck shaping, be sure to double-check the depth of the deck against the plans (and take the deck planking into account).  I didn't do that on mine, and the quarter deck wasn't deep enough - threw everything off later in the build.  But with the detail and attention you're giving this, I doubt you'll have any problem!

That is a great little work space you have. The first model space I had was an old school desk with the lift up lid. Yours is way nicer than that!

Thanks E.J! I have had a change of plan. I am going to plank and copper my hull before I thin the bulwarks and carve the deck. I'm doing this to keep the bulwarks from breaking while the hull is turned upside down. Time to do research on hull planking before I start!

Looking good Elijah.  You could also remove the bulwarks this will make it easier to carve the deck Then rebuild the bulkhead with stantions notched in the hull.  At the next meeting talk to Bob Filipowski who has done it many times.

Does anybody know some good sources of art tape? I need it for lining off the hull. I tried string, and it was a little awkward to work with.

Any suggestions are welcome! I'm still thinking about carving down the bulwarks. Hmmm…

Art supply store should have Charttex tape or something similar for  graphics (pre PC presentation stuff) or try an auto body shop for body detailing.

Elijah, I have used 1/4" painters tape for these sorts of things in the past.  But I would suggest that maybe a piece of cardstock would be better for your application, if I am correctly understanding what you are trying to do.  Know though, this is my first ship, and I have never planked a ship before, so my advice should be taken with a grain or two of salt.  But cardstock doesn't stretch easily, and it is good for patterns like this.

I tried string again. It didn't work out well. I guess it's time to try card stock!

The string should be where the pencil is pointing.
