Ok, I'll go along with the frames as they are. just me getting picky with age I guess  :D

Thanks all for input.

I don't think it is being picky. It looks like all the frame 6's are like this so i am sure you are not the first to bring the matter up with the manufacturers. If they have prior notice that there is a problem they should either fix it or at least add a note to the instructions to let the builder know an adjustment is needed. remember we pay good money for these kits especially part works and they should be respectful of that. (I can dream i suppose)

An Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie update:

I started painting the decorations.

This is how far I got after a couple of hours.

Still have to redo the eyes a couple of times:

post-6862-0-78754100-1472587018_thumb.jpg

And touch up on the skin. The figures are so small that when I miss the spot where the pupils should be I have to start all over with the whites again... It's just impossible to scrape the paint off so repainting is the thing.

To illustrate the size of these little buggers:

There are a pair of magnifying glasses with the next shipment. I may have to wait until they arrive...

A magnifyer lamp or optivisor is very handy for painting small details.

I noticed the paint came off on the knees and feet. White metal figures are easier to paint when you basecoat them before you start painting.

Paint comes off easily without basecoat.

When you have problems holding them when you paint them, maybe stick them to a toothpick with Blutac?

Love this build!

Great work.
The finish and skin tone looks just right.
I would suggest not using white for the eyewhites, And make sure to keep them almond shaped.
Remember, if you look at someones eyes, you see eye white only a bit on each side of the iris, if even that.
Returning with skin colour for the eyelids might be helpful in creating the right shape.
Bluish grey with a bit of sienna at the corners.
Perhaps at the scale you are painting, omitting the eyewhites altogether might be with a try.

What paints are you using? Oils can be helpful if you need more time to get details right.

Cheers,

Peter

Hello Peter

Remember I'm color blind, I have to go after what it says on the paint container.

Thanks for the input, all help is welcome. I'll try without white this evening.

The paints are Revell, Humbrol, Admiralty and Vallejo. Whatever I can get my hands on...

Try to degrease the figures with some acetone before you apply the base color.

(The mold in which the figures in cast is probably first injected with a type of oil)

This is what I do when i paint military models that are made in epoxy resin.

But be careful

not too much and not too long brushing on the figures !!

Hello folks,

Sometimes it just happens!

Shipment #4 arrived today! 2 weeks early!!! And I'm not even finished painting the decorations from last shipment.  :D

And this is the contents of issue 9, 10 11 and 12:

post-6862-0-99362600-1473188672_thumb.jpg

frames15 to 19, the last bit of the keel and deck or whatever one should call them. More like reinforcements.

One cannon:

post-6862-0-48950200-1473188675_thumb.jpg

Another knight:

post-6862-0-41629400-1473188677_thumb.jpg

A harp player:

post-6862-0-33198300-1473188679_thumb.jpg

And a Golem or demon or something:

post-6862-0-32447500-1473188681_thumb.jpg

If you look at the size of the knight and the harpist and then look at the instructions on how to paint them, you'll see that the level of detail is almost absurd!

Jan: One more frame to go in October. The stern is built like a box and can't really be called frames.

I was wrong about frames 9 and 10!

If you look at part D3 ("deck") here you'll see that the slot fits with the width of frame 9 and 10.

So DeAgostini has some meaning with the "bulge" by frame 9.

Now bedtime for me!

I build my Sherbourne also :). But tbh I only now have returned to the building table since the summer break. And I am also too much fan of playing World of warships on the computer at the moment........

About the eyes. Try using a light light grey. This to avoid the "pop eye look". One trick is to paint a horizontal sliver of grey as the white of the eyes. After that a thin horizontal sliver of black as the " eye" itself across the grey, almost like a cross. A brush with a good point is necessary, use fairly watery paint to paint the black.

After this you paint the skin color around it, "shaping" the eye with skin color. Basically keeping an almond shape of light grey and black.

But at this scale, (the figure looks like about 1:72 scale, the eyes would not be visible at "normal viewing distance". That is a person looking at the ship from about 1,5-2 feet away would not see the eyes so omitting them is an option.

Some more advice for painting metal. First scrub the figure with hot water, a little dishwashing detergent and a toothbrush. Let it dry. Prime with GW black primer ( GW = Games Workshop). It is a very good primer. After the figure is painted give it a coat of clear varnish, either dull, semi shiny or shiny, depending on what you like.

Update

All the frames I received so far are mounted. And there IS mistake from the manufacturer.

The reinforcement for the cannondeck does not fit at all.

Look here:

post-6862-0-88524800-1473539021_thumb.jpg

Somehow they have altered the piece somewhere along the way.

Instructions show this:

And I got this:

post-6862-0-14452800-1473539025_thumb.jpg

We'll see what turns up in the next shipment. maybe one can just glue the parts together anyway...  :)

This is how she looks now:

post-6862-0-41309100-1473539026_thumb.jpg

71 cm long so far:

Also finished the lions heads. Unfortunately this is the best I can do in this scale.

It's just too small for my sight and shaky hands:

post-6862-0-34981300-1473539030_thumb.jpg

And a frightened knight. He's really not that shiny.

Thanks bob and Jan,

Large indeed. May have to try and sell her when she's finished. (If I don't make a mess of it) Really have no room for a ship of this size.

Still waiting for any feedback from DeAgostini on my complaint on the frames...
