Interesting bits of information

Carl,  you are not from Gelderland in the Netherlands, you are from Doel in Flanders Belgium.

In my back yard... ;)

So we must have something in common ... you can build lovely models and I cannot ;) :D

P.s. You are right, my origins are not from Gelderland

Hello,

After the historical info about Verrebroek. And what can be found in "my backyard" when you start digging ;)

A small update about the model.

Because the doors of the main cabin are open. Some furniture and other items must be provided.
Drawing a small sketch in advance is always handy.

IMG_20190415_170457.thumb.jpg.21600f807f3ffa21936393baeb2c0ae9.jpg
A table and a few beds.  Made from scrap wood and paper tissue.

Suitcases of the people who are allowed to "live" and work in this cabin. And some old maps downloaded with google and printed.

If the visibility in the cabin remains good with the ledlights , additional items will be provided.

Patrick,

This last series of photos are a real treat!!  Love the maps - how did you ever reduce those jpg's to such a small size - very creative. Also your interior shots at eye level are great - GoPro single frame??

Cheers,

Michael

Thanks Michael,

The maps are really easy to do.
1 Download the images and save to a folder
2 Select what you want to print
3 Choose  format
4 print
I use the printer at work (don't tell my boss ;))

Thanks Lawrence,

Started making 4 "wrouth iron" cannons. This type of cannon was still in use during this period.

The base: 4 blocks of cherry wood. A hole is drilled and a piece is cut out.

The cannon barrel. the first piece is a test, Made from a piece of plastic sprue and various pieces of plastic strip. Bolts are made from stretched sprue.

Patrick,

As all are saying - great work indeed. Your level of research for this project is great to follow as well. Must be fun looking for, and building as historically accurate as possible these details into this brilliant project.

Cheers,

Michael

Thank you everyone for following and the nice comments.

The construction of the guns continues slowly. I build each cannon as a separate model, something like my military model building on a 1/72 scale.

progress of the cannons, and i made metal rings of different diameters. Top left in the photo are a few (low quality) purchased cannon barrels that I wanted to use first.

Marvelous work on the guns. How far did you drill out the spues, or have you switch to some kind of plast/styrene tube? I would go for the styrene tubes fro Evergreen, quick and simple - easy to say when you have a stack of styrene laying around like me

The sprues have been drilled approximately 3.5 mm deep. Caution is required during drilling.
The bore is 3 mm and the outside diameter of the barrel is only 4 mm.
I used 4 drills. 1 mm, 1.5 mm, 2 mm, and 3 mm. all drilled by hand.

This is how I make plastic strips. A "photo cutter" is ideal for doing this.  I have the desired thicknesses and widths always in stock this way.

Painted.

Interior in matte black. The "top of the barrel" is then accented with pencil (also possible with matt silver)

I've used the pencil highlight for metal going back 30 years, but now I use metal powders, applied to a properly prepared surface, they are indistinguishable from actual metal. Uschi van der Rosten carries a number of modern metal powders and pastes, you should give them a try.

The 4 cannons are ready. Together with a part of the necessary extra parts and tools.

The installation of the parts has started.(the cannons are not yet glued to the deck)
Here and there I made some errors on the inside of the hull, the intention is to hide these errors with various items.

IMG_20190520_134410.thumb.jpg.730ab0f22e785f5d7de498cadcd8faa4.jpgIMG_20190520_134444.thumb.jpg.1f4a533e5f03683562e8e55ad4c85e4d.jpg

These cannons look really medieval and inappropriate on a ship from this time. But historically they are correct.

One cannon is placed in the front castle. I still have two small cannons to make.

Mostly the cannons on armed merchantman (and probably also on some warships) came from different sources. They used what was available.
That is why most cannonbarrels below deck are different.
And these 4 are certainly different. At the time, the barrels were forged one by one and then placed on large costum made heavy beams.

Let us say that 3 pieces were already painted when they came on board. The 4th was not painted, and the budget was too low to buy extra paint ;)

Errors (not vissible on the picture)

2 Nails (bolts) come through the wood on the inside :default_wallbash: and it is now impossible to remove them.

Or from now on I must wear safety clothing like at the factory where I work.
Workclothes
helmet
safety glasses
ear protection
gloves
and ... safety shoes

Small update

Found a solution to camouflage a few errors and a suitable place to stow the bars of the capstan.

IMG_20190523_191711.thumb.jpg.816534c4218c8c955a26fddf50f0b179.jpg
made 3 bars and 3 dummies

IMG_20190522_191336.thumb.jpg.00fc08a31a56eae3c0c9fd5e26b3c284.jpg
glued them together

IMG_20190523_191353.thumb.jpg.d186808ccdd2e3da90c3983234bdac31.jpg
and in place

IMG_20190523_191556.thumb.jpg.eed282520e59708bc3ba2295aefbe37b.jpg
finished and 1 error invisible and 1 error almost invisible

Errors ?

I didn't notice.

Wonderful work

Thanks,

It was my lucky day.
The square parts of the bars measure 3 mm, the space between 2 frames is 9 mm. And there could be 2 bar behind each other between the frames.
So just enough room to place the 6 bars of the capstan.

Due to other activities (painting and gardening) there is little time left for modeling.:(

I made 2 doors. These doors are made in the same way as the doors in the stern and the beakhead. The only exception is that these doors are only finished on one side because the back is not visible.

IMG_20190603_072638.thumb.jpg.99eec89c83349a187ffd8bacc8753c7e.jpgIMG_20190603_072725.thumb.jpg.78d06bba6eb3c5b2c7a3acfe37866196.jpg

I also attempted to install the LED lighting. Each LED light is "hidden" by a simple lantern.
I am not completely satisfied with this solution, but once the ceiling is installed it seems pretty ok. And there is sufficient light.

The intention is to make the hatch of the helmsman removable and provide power to the LED lamps at this location.

Looks nice with the light on.

You're not the only one working in the garden it is the same situation here. This week I spend more time in the garden than in the workshop but it is as pleasant.
