HMS Bounty by Steve 12345 - FINISHED - Billing Boats - 1:50

So as promised here is what I have been up to on the bounty while awaiting final parts required and alongside my other little build the fast patrol launch

 

 

I am adding as many lines as possible to the masts off ship this will speed things up dramatically however it feels very commercial and I was happier with my previous build just to add one line at a time on ship and keep everything tidy ,even tho it does mean a lot of tedious fidely work

 

 

I am not going for super accuracy on the rigging ,more just as billings intended ,the ship is already inaccurate in many ways so I don't feel the need to spend three four five years rigging

I hope to keep the whole build down to under one year .

 

the last thing I need is the sails that came with the kit sewed up for me so I cut them all to size and took them to a seemstres I was quoted fifty pounds due to the work actually involved and I do understand that but was a bit shocked ,I have tried buying pre sewn sails in 1/50 but have been unsuccessfull

my mother has volunteered to give the sails a go and they are currently at her house so will hopefully get to show you them in next couple of weeks.

we will see how they turn out but I think I will use them regardless of how they turn out as it will be nice to have another family members touch involved in the build .

I have given my mother the pictures on the box and asked if she can replicate that ,they are far from realistic but I do like a ship to have sails

Your Bounty is beautiful - my wife sewed up the sails for my Privateer Rattlesnake and they turned out great.  She used what was called ballooner cloth.  I don't know if you can get it now. Your comment about family members getting involved is so true - my wife passed away 11 months ago and it's great to look at that ship model and remember she was a part of the build.  I thank you for triggering that memory.

Hello all arrived home from work today to a pleasant surprise my cornwall order

 

remaining 8mm belaying pins

 

six mm chainplate

 

lettering for transom

walnut blocks

and last but not least 24' cutter/jollyboat

shown next to the billings scale drawing I think the size is spot on

caldercraft on left billings on right

the instructions seem a bit difficult to take in on one breath and ive read them several times and still a bit lost ,I do wish I could find a log with one of the little caldercraft boats being built but im sure I will work it out and be able to post here and help others

I made a couple of these a few years back. Hear are a few tips:

• Lose the black paper. For the ribs use some thin wooden strip instead, it looks much better.
• I could not get that bit of wood they supply as a floor to fit in any of them. I replaced this with a few planks run along the length on top of the wood ribs.
• Find some pictures or drawings of the real things. Try and add the fittings for masts, knees etc.
• Gratings always help. I just used 0.5mm strips at right angles. Its difficult to tell the difference when they are that small and thin.

I have got one that's not finished yet, I will take a couple of pictures this evening and post them to show you what I mean.

 

You are making a good job of the Billings kit. I have also found it necessary to replace some of the supplied parts. I see from your pictures that the blocks and deadeyes  they supply are the same ones as supplied on my model even though the ships they represent were launched 150 years apart.

Goodies arriving by mail order are good ya There are a lot of the caldercraft victory kits where the builders have covered building the ships boats on here steve.

Thanks Glen that is extremely helpful and I hear you on ditching the black paper I am currently in the process of ripping some timber for the job im assuming your having all the inside of the boat the same colour I would like to paint the hull white inside and stain the wood before adding it but not sure how that will turn out

Hi Steve I'm away for a few days but I saw your post and I too have found Cornwall and it's a real Alladins Cave. What material is the cutter made from as it appears to be plastic. Do you clad it with planking to get a clinkered effect?

The blocks look real quality from Caldercraft so I think I'll be looking at them for future kits.

Hi Steve, as a newbie to model ship building I stumbled on your build log and have been very impressed with the detail provided. I have also been able to get quite a few ideas and suggestions when I start my third build (Colonial Sloop Norfolk by Modelers Shipyard) in the next couple of weeks.

 

Your work and detail of finish is fantastic....something I hope I can achieve. Keep up with the build log and I will be following your log with great interest.

Hello all some of you may be wondering why I haven't posted in a few days that's because I have been spending most of my free time researching ,sourcing and planning my next build ive been contemplating my next build for some time now and have finally pulled the trigger on it the box arrived today

Hi Steve,   Building them is the easy part, learning to fly and keeping them in one piece until you do is the challenge. If you haven't thought about it yet I strongly suggest that you join a club, they will teach and guide you, you'll get much more from the hobby as without help early on it will not only get frustrating but become expensive.

There's already a couple of build logs there of aircraft, plus a couple of stage coaches from the 1800s.

Hello all sorry for the delay on the bounty ,the arrival of a new kit always steals your attention for a few days but I think im over that now

anyone familiar with the plane kits will be aware the fuselage and wings are built on top of the plans and with plans of such large size my dining room table setup just wasent gonna surfice so I have cleared a spare room a created a new shipyard soon to be hanger as promised the bounty will be completed before starting work on the plane I think I ow that to my self after the hard work already put in,and as I showed earlier in my build log I need to stick to one build at a time or which ever im most ecited about will steal all the attention. here is a couple pics of my new work room  I have put together this week and really should have done a long time ago I am delighted with the space I now have the room is 2 meters by three meters and the work surfaces aren 800mm wide  ,work will now commence on the bounty tomorrow

Hello all

having not worked on the bounty for a full week I thought I would ease myself back into things by checking some things of the snag list

here is the letters added to the transom which I think turned out great

 

 

had a redo on the anchors adding a small block for more detail

 

 

this contraption hold the foremast at the correct angle so I can see the angle of the shrouds and add the chain plates

 

 

I opted to replace the billings chainplates and went amita this required a small link to be built

I used to do this a few years ago but I was a "Shocking" Pilot, so, I found Ship Modelling....  Cant "Wipe Out" a Ship Model in a Cabinet!!

(You're doing things in reverse!!  )

Thanks harry ive noticed there seems to be a few ex rc guys around here that have now turned to ship building hopefully the skill sets will be similar and I wont be to lost ,as for the flying I don't anticipate that happening for at least a year and hope to have joined a club and flown some smaller models first seems crazy spending a year building something and sending it in the air but I think if I can pull it off id be real happy just to fly it a few times per year who knows we will see.

 

Back to the Bounty

 

after completion of all the chain links both port and starboard im onto placing the foremast

 

 

using my jig shown previous to set the angle first fitted was the forestay

then came the shrouds

followed by the backstays

and finally more forestays

forgive me if im not using the correct names of lines here

tomorrow evening I will complete the foremast by adding the lower rat lines then its onto the main mast using this little jig

One question - did you drill out the hole for the masts at the correct angle or slightly oversize to be able to adjust them as you rig?

Hi Nigel the hole in the false plywood deck predetermined the size it is a snug fit but the mast was free to move in any direction, billings provides measurements for you to find the correct angle of the mast

Unfortunately Constructo just say drill 2cm hole as per drawing. I think I'm going to slightly oversize the holes and shim the mast bases up when the stays are rigged. Long way off yet though.

as I mentioned a while ago......it was good that you didn't use the Billing supplied parts for the chain plate.   I still have a good inventory of those flat pieces,  and I continue to use them for other things     she's looking great..love what you did for the chains........really nice progress as well  

 

I built a Guillow's Piper Cub as my very first,  when I was in school.......there's a rather funny story that goes long with it.  I had a great teacher {literally!}  though it only had a 12 inch wingspan,  it's would be a mosquito compared to what your future holds for you.........I am green with envy!   I'll look forward to the start of that build
