Matti,

Excellent comparisons. As Nigel said, you really got it right.

Hi Matti,

Your paintwork is amazing! You have nearly the same detail as the monster 1/10 version at a much smaller scale. Really well done!

I worked on a Levin guitar years ago and it had a great tone. Hope you enjoy it. Happy birthday!

Ive had a busy week, but managed to get som time to paint the poles. It took some time as there are many colors on them and IMO was hard to get uniform with the rest of the ship, so a lot of paint mixing and blending. They are really fragile as they get very small areas to glue to the ship, so no touching (something some friends have a problem understanding when they see her).

So now the stern is finished and I can start to look (with some fear) at the gallery sculptures. Hopefully I can show some figures next update and not just melted plastic... Time to get that soldering iron Nigel.

More excellent paintwork Matti B)  B) This has got to be one of the,if not the, most realistic looking stern representations of Wasa I have seen(and yes i have seen Clayton Johnson's model).I wish you the best of luck with the soldering iron,i hope all goes well.

Hi Matti,

Have you started bending the delicate gallery parts yet? I was thinking about that and was concerned that a soldering iron shaft would be too hot. In the past, I have bent wood over a bare incandescent lightbulb without mishap. Make sure to wear very dark (or 2 stacked pairs) of sunglasses to protect your eyes and gloves for your fingers. Although I had no problems, it would be good to make sure the kids or any pets were clear of the area in the unlikely but possible event a bulb shattered (use very light pressure). You could start with a 40 watt bulb and progress to higher wattage as needed.

Best of luck! Your latest stern picture is incredible!!

Actually my job is kinda hectic at the moment, so I only had time to do the long sculptures below the galleries, and was planning to start the delicate ones now.

Thanks for the concern and great idea! In Sweden we cant buy the old style light bulbs anymore and the new low energy ones dont get a good heat I think. I could be wrong, but they have a plastic cover.

I think I can get the soldering idea to work, starting far away from it and go closer little by little.

Thanks again Buck!

Buck, Matti,

I must be very old school. The bulb idea I had not really heard of. I always thought that soaking the strips in hot water was the answer (:-)

once I saw an old photo with some guy bending a stick over a lit candle. Here is the reference. I had forgotten that I still had this old book.

Eddison would be proud of you using his application for model ship building (:-)

The suit is really not good  :P

I have a bad experience with fire. Is better I bend over steam.  Wood then goes very well bent, soft.  Everyone has their own experience.

Yeah you are right, id probably superglue the tie to the table or worse... ;)

Bending... Ah yeah agreed, but the sculptures are plastic, and boiling water dont make it soft enough for the more sharp bends.

I duct taped the soldering iron to a board so it will not slip or get dangerous earlier. Ill let you know how it works.

Hi Matti

You will probably find the iron shaft is cooler the closer you get to the handle.I have one of those fancy temperature controlled soldering stations, but that wouldn't work as everything is ceramic coated apart from a few mm's at the tip.Good luck mate,I have every confidence in you!

Kind Regards Nigel

Did some tests. The soldering iron works like a charm and is pretty undramatic to work with., so thanks for the advice mate. The first was tricky though as the piece was to thick to bend easy, but I got it into shape after a while. But when testholding it against the tower made me decide I have to thin them down. After I sanded them to maybe 50-60% of their original thickness, bending them was quite easy With the soldering iron and it looks much better on the tower aswell.

Im still on the fence of not putting any on the top towers as a nod to the original on the museum. I do the other towers first, giving me time to decide.
