So I’ve staryed on the main superstructure and bridge. Pontos has added some nice stuff like booms and a few doors but there is an enormous amount of superdetailing to go. I’ve added doors and portholes where the Kagero plans say, cut out some plastic that holds no relevance to the ship (mounds in front of plastic in front of where doors are), cable reels, more portholes etc.

this is going to have to be built on on such a way I can paint it in 3 or 4 sections as there is a lot of details to add on the decks, 20mms, signal lamps, search lights, binoculars, gun directors, cabling, life rafts and floats and on and on.

How about  a thin piece of plastic card or brass sheet if you have one,  you could cut it to fit the whole frontal section, when glued togather and add some details to that - port holes etc.

Shapeways make them but these things are tiny. So, I started stretching some sprue, thinking I could stack some up, but couldn’t get it thick enough, then I found some 1mm brass wire, cut it to 8mm lengths and did stacks of 10 then wrapped them in .1mm brass wire after a drop of very thin CA to bind them. They look OK.

I have to use the flush cutters to get to get rid of the silly blob used by Tamiya to represent them, then add a few gussets.

Yeah, that'll work.  This will be a super nice model with all the detail stuff you are adding and removing the fake stuff.

Cheers,

Royal Navy flota nets. I can’t get around avoiding these. As far as I can figure there are 6 sets at the front of the bridge superstructure.

I'll try to get you some camouflage pictures today of the KGV during the 1943 period from a book on British battleships and cruisers I've got (same series as the one on destroyers I showed in the RN H class log) and her initial camouflage, which wasn't a single grey with a green or blue rectangle

Yes it was camouflaged for fear of destruction in the yard - she was still under construction at the beginning of WWI - that was grey and grey, after that a light grey, and a dark grey version, and from late '42 until her refit in '44 a more colourful  camouflage

those protrusions under them........they might be a molded interpretation of them.   did you give any thought to trimming them off?   looking at your after picture,  it looks as though you did.    in the actual ship photos though,  it appears that they were positioned above the portholes,  lining the structure bulwarks.  are you also going to open up the windows to the left of them.

The b&w photo is a generic one, not of the KGV, so I’m going off the actual photos of the ship.

The window to the left will will just be painted black as it’s very small. With the camouflage patterns a lot of this detail will not be discernible as it is overall the size of a human thumb nail.

I can get you larger pictures, PM me if you want to. Size has it's limitations, or is it disruptiveness ...

Some very cool schemes there.

Fore funnel done. The funnel grills are a stressful exercise but they really transform it from a toy to a model. I need to add a few more ladders but not until I know how the masts sit.28DC7C46-151F-4DA3-8D89-DB2361BDCF89.jpeg

It really does make a vast difference, Greg, so much better. Is it a tripod mast?

Yes, there are 2 large tripod masts to add.

Given the difficulty level I’ll probably leave them till last. Lots of work to go on this bridge superstructure to go get, it will soak up a lot of PE and extra details. You’d be disappointed otherwise.

and you wouldn't want to disappoint me ... naturally ... you did, as usual, trigger my curiosity though ... cannot wait for the sequel on the bridge's decorations

For some reason the Pontos instructions are not for the Tamiya KVG. The main gun director is a different piece to the ones used in the instructions and is about 3mm too low and both are utterly devoid of details at the front. I used the main turret lug to lift it up enough. The secondary gun directors had a radar between them in the Pontos 41 version but not in the 43 version. It also gives you some gantry that go beneath them that are on the POW but never on KGV.

Next will be the bridge facade and wind deflectors. I can’t glue it all up yet as I want to prime it then do the decks on this piece as there are binoculars, search lights, signal lamps, more MG directors, flag lockers.
