Am I the only one who saves EVERY scrap of wood until a project is finished

Nope, not at all!! It can be very useful! I find myself, not just using the scrap for the build but also for testing stain or risky procedures. I have found myself using the scarp from my previous build on the current one!

I got started this morning by gathering the parts to make my paddles, mostly from my scrap pile. Also pictured are two paddles that were in the box when I got the kit. Not sure if they were part of the kit or not but they don't really match.

20200328_075647.thumb.jpg.6979f6d15cf8ff1d407cb6213a88aaa3.jpg

First I edge glued the cherry and basswood strips together. Once that was dry I cut the parts using my razor saw and miter box.

20200328_130731.thumb.jpg.131bc3ea857d64ad7ed0418fc06df5e5.jpg

Then I glued them to the dowel like so to form a rough paddle.

20200328_142833.thumb.jpg.7185cb36bfefb88956b1e91353caf0e6.jpg

Then after quite a bit of sanding and then even more sanding I was left with a pair of paddles.

And as long as I was in sanding mode I did the "final" final sanding on the hull.

Then it was time to start assembling the canoe it self. I wanted to be sure to at least get one coat of finish on the underside of the deck planks. So I did that before assembling them. I applied a coat to all the surfaces that would be inaccessible after they were glued in.

20200328_161353.thumb.jpg.e7cc8707e96547fbfe7ce1c9e456ff3d.jpg

Not sure why the underside of the deck looks so bad but I can assure you it is nice and smooth. Must be the lights.

Now I am waiting for glue to dry again then the first full coat of poly tonight and more of the same tomorrow.

Thanks for the comments and the likes.

Best Regards

I managed to get 3 coats of satin poly on the paddles and the interior surfaces so far. Should be able to handle it enough tonight to get a at least 1 coat on the outside. I also got my workbench all cleaned off and ready for my next project which I have not decided on yet. I have plenty to chose from on the shelf.

Well it has been a while but finally some progress to report. I have not been Idle since my last update but since I could only manage one coat of poly a day and waiting for paint to dry is boring enough I did not think it was worth an update.

I decided I needed some shiny bits and pieces. The kit did not provide any so I had to make them.

I stared with come strip brass I had laying around.

20200401_161632(0).thumb.jpg.94285b1b0c04f08884e44b2939d2aeea.jpg

And cut off a couple of small pieces about an 1/8" or so. Then a little rough shaping with file and sand paper.

20200401_162605.thumb.jpg.9adb4f9723e5070280bc919f4beea2c7.jpg

Then I clamped them both in my handy all purpose jig one on top of the other.

20200401_163347.thumb.jpg.ffcfbae38ac86aaab674093376d1b345.jpg

and drilled some holes.

20200401_165402.thumb.jpg.ae4a36fb6009932f4f19f1b5e488a995.jpg

Then I rubbed them around in some jewelers rouge.

20200401_170355.thumb.jpg.a6425a60a4b8b6c897cad6c2f23d8d77.jpg

And this is what I was left with.

20200401_171145.thumb.jpg.245e1e668fb1544ca4d73ef072c0c441.jpg

Add a little bent wire and rings and .....

20200401_175428.thumb.jpg.91008b0f90ad86c18d1d5766a77535ef.jpg

I added some rope and whipped some loops onto the rings.

20200401_183334.thumb.jpg.3fea470761af1e05b542be0455003f81.jpg

I glued the plates in place with a tiny drop of medium CA applied with a sewing needle.

20200401_181407.thumb.jpg.1c509b9787f36de6362ede8d2c619f85.jpg

Then very carefully drilled through the holes.20200401_183618.thumb.jpg.75c49acea8d4bd4ac1f9d174036d0083.jpg

Once that was done it was simply a matter of pressing the hasps and loops in place.

20200401_184021.thumb.jpg.e9e901ccf0ea70f2374265deaacffcb0.jpg

And I think that with the exception of a display base which I have yet to make up my mind on that we can call this one finished.

At least 3 coats of poly on everything with a light sanding with 800 grit between coats. All in all this has been a fun and challenging little project. I think the few mods I added give this one a little character and uniqueness that made them worth doing.

I will update again when I figure out the base.

Until then thanks to everyone that followed, liked and commented on this build. I hope you had as much fun as I did with it.

Best regards and stay safe.

Looks great! And I’m a voyageur and I know my canoes! 😉

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore is a habit, not an act.

~ Aristotle

I could carry, paddle, walk and sing with any man I ever saw. I have been twenty-four years a canoe man, and forty-one years in service; no portage was ever too long for me, fifty songs could I sing. I have saved the lives of ten voyageurs, have had twelve wives and six running dogs. I spent all of my money in pleasure. Were I young again, I would spend my life the same way over. There is no life so happy as a voyageur's life!

Thanks for all the kind words and likes.

Chris, I agree it is a real shame. Sadly I discovered the hobby too late and now they cost an arm and a leg when they come up on e-bay. Also it would seem that Dave (Duanelaker) was well ahead of everyone else and started hoarding them instead of TP. Lol!

I was out walking the dogs this morning and decided to go around the lake across the street and found that the level has dropped quite a bit in the last couple of days. Not unusual around here to see level fluctuations of a couple of feet in just a week or so. The drop had exposed a few weathered tree limbs that were now just sitting there. I grabbed this one thinking that with a few well placed cuts there may be a base for my canoe in there somewhere.

I am shamelessly stealing this idea from Bob G. who posted a pic of his Indian Girl Canoe displayed on a piece of tree limb in duanelakers build thread. Thanks Bob!

Of course the admiral was very pleased (NOT) to see me returning from our walk dragging an old tree limb up the driveway. I am going to leave it out in the sun to make sure it is completely dry before I start cutting.

Don't worry, my copyright hasn't been completed yet so I can't sue you!

It looks like you found a nice piece of driftwood. I think it's a great way to display a canoe and you certainly have built a canoe that deserves a beautiful display. I originally thought that I might make a small diorama with the forward half of the canoe pulled up on a sandy beach and tied off to a driftwood log but that was going to take up too much room to display the limited space of our small house.

Here's a look at my Indian Girl again:

Bob,

Just a wild guess but is that a piano key board lid your canoe is sitting on? I will have to come up with a decent back drop and get some quality pics of this once it is complete.

Well after staring at this thing for half the morning and then a lot of snipping and cutting and sanding it went from this.

20200404_093119.thumb.jpg.22b1272ef89b346de86cbeef39d666b8.jpg

To this.

20200404_131542.thumb.jpg.584cc2762ff357be1344ae1e0cce8c41.jpg20200404_131604.thumb.jpg.233b002a768119d3c71f5c8234040198.jpg

Since it was submerged for so long I am going to let it dry for a good long time as I am afraid some of the darker spots are mold or mildew. I might even bake it in the oven for a while. Here it is with the canoe on it.

20200404_131638.thumb.jpg.8f10cd96a346019d5001e4311bf258e5.jpg20200404_131710.thumb.jpg.b89cbac8e8986a34d4c2d76bfbcabef9.jpg20200404_131737.thumb.jpg.907ea3a215c73e1769d6dbe71de0dae4.jpg

I tried to leave the front "leg" so that it kind of looks like it is still partially submerged in the lake. Once I am sure it is good and dried out I will wipe on a couple coats of poly.

That's it for now.

Best Regards

Yes it is. The piano is satin black and it sits by a large window that gets nice, indirect light and I like to take photos on it especially later in the day when the light is more golden. I just use my iPhone and make minor adjustments in the phone's built in photo editing tools. Looking at the photo of my canoe now I think it's a bit dark and I could have lightened up the exposure just a little.

I think you've found a nice section of the driftwood for the display. The canoe sits nicely on it. The poly should help deepen the color in the driftwood and give it a bit more contrast to your canoe. I don't think you want the base and your canoe to be so close in color that they tend to almost run together. I think you want the canoe and the base to be separate points of interest with the canoe being the main focus that the eye is drawn to. That's just a personal choice to consider. She's a real beauty.

Thanks Bob,

I agree the base is just a "supporting" character in the overall story. Some stories however require more "support" than others and in some cases the base while still short of being a complete diorama can still steal a scene now and then.

Wow, I think I was channeling Siskel and Ebert there for a moment.

Well done and by golly done. I tried to take some shots with the only neutral background I had. I thought I might post them in the gallery. But as you can plainly see I am no better at photography than I am at playing concert violin.

Here is the base with 3 coats of wipe on poly.

And a couple of parting shots. Since I took them I might just as well post them.

This build was so enjoyable I have actually given thought to scaling up the plans and building a 1/6 scale version. In the mean time I have a Model Expo cannon and limber combo I picked up when they first became available or I might start my AL King of the Mississippi. Or I might try to track down another Midwest Kit.
