M4A3 Sherman w/ 105 mm Howitzer & 75 mm Long Gun tanks by Jack12477 - 1:35 scale - Tamiya - FINISHED

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

After debating whether to build one of the new tank kits I just acquired, or an aircraft, car or ship model kit, I decided on one of the tanks.

I am building the Tamiya 1:35 scale US Medium M4A3 Sherman 105 mm Howitzer Assault Support tank as it appeared in December 1944 at Ardennes or the Battle of the Bulge, (see box art below).  The kit actually comes in two version, the second being 1945 Germany.  I chose this version more for the paint scheme than any other reason. The other version is a plain olive drab overall color.

The kit comes with 9 sprues, tank body 2 halves, and 2 tank treads. It's molded in a dark green, olive drab, color. There are also 5 figures with the kit, tank driver and commander, plus 3 infantry figures.

I have not decided yet on how I will display this when done.  Maybe a diorama, but who knows. Anyway, the journey begins.

Tamiya always produces nice kits. Looking forward to following this, Jack. You doing any aftermarket goodies or will you go with what's in the box? Can't imagine needing much of anything.

I will go with what's in box, Ken. I do have extra goodies from other Tamiya kits I can add, but not going to order any PE or stuff like that. What you see in the box art is pretty much what is included in the kit. Extra boxes, jerry can, helmets rifles, tank tread links, etc

Thinking about it.  Have to figure out how I want to depict Ardennes forest road in winter.  Have some ideas rumbling around in the skull.  First the tank and included figures then ?????

Tom, I would recommend Tamiya 1:35 scale kits. The parts fit together so precisely it takes little time to build one, quality is top notch, they even include poly-caps that allow wheels, etc to turn with ease. And there is a wide range of armor types to chose from. Take the plunge.  I get my kits from MegaHobby in NJ , ordered 3 kits last Monday before noon, arrived Wed at noon this week.

Wow, An M-4 105...... Snowy road, tank kinda sideways from sliding off the crown of the frozen ice clogged cobblestones, shell casings laying around from direct fire against german defensive bunkers, third armored counterattack against the left flank of the salient surrounding Bastogne....... Three man observation team directing fire......

The possibilities are endless.......  maybe a smashed Pak 40 in the ditch on the opposite side of the road.....

(Winter wonderland visions fading away......)

I'm in.....

The only suggestion I could make? I know the desire to build OOB, (it can be done) but I would recommend ditching the kit's vinyl tracks and going with a period correct T54E1 Workable Track Link Set (amazon) probably cheaper on Evilbay... changes the whole look. That is the only deficiency with Tamiya armored vehicles is their reliance on plastic rubber band tracks that are a pain to get to lay right....,  Especially in a diorama, if you choose to go in that direction......

Either way I'm sure it is going to come out wonderful....

Personally I like the Tamiya kit tracks, only kit tracks I'use that did not disintegrate on me.  I have 2 armor vehicles by Hasagawa with no tank tread, disintegrated over time. All the Tamiyas are over 20 years old and still have all the treads.

Evilbay and Amazon are a non-starter for me.

I take it then you know how to use them, it took me almost ten years to figure it out myself, (before the internet) before that, they had a mind of their own and would never lay right........

Anyway, looking forward to this Jack, you do armor very very well.....
