Are you going to be able to even move this thing when it is done? It looks massive, and built like a tank!

Heck with all that framing to attach to he could go 1/8" and when curved it would be rock solid!

To plank the inside of the bow, I first place a plank vertically and press it into the curve.

I take another plank and lay it over and press it into the first and trace the edge.

Then cut, and trim to fit. I completely guessed on how to do this but it worked out really well. Sometimes I get lucky!

Transom planking!  Pretty straightforward, only tricky part was making the holes for the assembly bolts. I was able to use an appropriately sized forsner bit and a paper towel tube to make a little tunnel to the bolt.

This was a very fun process.  Going back and forth from my saw to the boat to size, mark, cut, nail and repeat!

The main part of the transom comes off in one piece. I attached some guide planks to the outer pieces and the finished them with the main piece removed.

Will there be carvings on the stern and figurehead?   BTW, how are the kids going to get in and out of this?   Over the top?

Actually there will be a carving for the stern! I found a neat looking scroll piece at Home Depot that fits nicely!  Next up will be the ladder (where the water bottle is in Jasseji’s post) and a few finishing touches before stain and paint. No figure head planned at the moment. My son wants one though. I might try to 3D print something?

Ladder time!  I thought I had a picture of my setup to drill the pockets for the rungs, but apparently not.  The side rails are pine 2x4’s and the rungs are 2” hardwood dowels.  I used my drill press and a 2” forsner bit to drill down a pocket 3/4”. I had to use a mallet to tap the dowels into the pockets. It was very satisfying!  The top of the rails are matched the side of the ship. I won’t trim the bottoms until it’s in it’s final place.

Next up are the moldings.  The straight pieces are just 1x6’s with 1/4” over round.

The bow was much more of a pain in the butt.  I used a combination of CAD and trial and error with cardboard to get the angles right. The pieces were then doweled and glued together before cutting to the final shape.

Up next is the cat head. Every ship bed has to have a cat head right?

This is probably the most historically accurate thing on the whole bed. It is cut out of a 4x4. The pulley groove was drilled and then chiseled. Not my best efforts, but all that I could do with the tools on hand. I used a 1/2” dowel rod for the axle and a hole saw to cut the pulley out of some scrap stock.  I had to cut a groove out of the molding to set it down into.

I really struggled with how to make the roof of the gallery. I tried some aluminum flashing, I even thought about making wooden shingles. In the end, some sawn down wooden strakes and a cardboard center tubing from some Christmas wrapping paper did the trick! Just a little bit of custom molding around the edges to finish it off!
