Nice rope! What is the brand and type of thread? I can't really read the label in the photo.

It is Gutterman cotton thread. I guess the number is the color.

Here is how I am doing the breach ropes.

First I clamp the rope in the quad hands.

PXL_20210819_215735079.thumb.jpg.a45fe750076ab1d9685567c155b16c95.jpg

Then tie a knot with the same color thread and apply thinned glue to make the knot tight.

PXL_20210819_215903346.thumb.jpg.614551081d48aae6685b7e687cdb527c.jpg

Then do 7 wraps and clamp the free end down. I captured the other end under the wraps so it sticks out the bottom of the wraps.

PXL_20210819_220010033.thumb.jpg.e6c470d59159a6aaea974e5d6b28730c.jpg

Then knot these ends together and apply more thinned glue to make them tight.

With a fresh #11 blade trim the ends as close as I dare.

Here is one of the 12 completed ropes.

So now for the cannons and gun carriages...

I did something different and drew the cannons and carriages up in Fusion 360 and 3d printed them. It wasn't as easy as it sounds as it took a few tries to get it right.

I know some of you will scoff at this and that's perfectly ok. I wanted to see if I could do it and have the software and printer.

Here are the 10 carriages printed on the build plate. This was a 5 hour print at .1 mm resolution.

PXL_20210820_222622832.thumb.jpg.da262a86e1bea118fce863bdf8de506e.jpg

After some minor prep I glued the wheels on with cya.

PXL_20210822_181926179.thumb.jpg.aad73bdc0aa49594b756a44e70081d00.jpg

Then used badger white primer and then sprayed the red with 3 coats.

The handles are wood and turned with the dremel.

PXL_20210822_203254897.thumb.jpg.e8ea3da101d7e7efcbbfeeef358f47e2.jpg

PXL_20210822_203258543.thumb.jpg.5367dd1ed453758ea2056962b03d4f80.jpg

I drilled all the holes for the eyelets and mounted the cannons which were sprayed with the badger black primer. I used some fine masking tape painted for the cannon hold down parts.

They look good to me.  When zoomed up I like the cannons cast like surface.

I have a few thoughts that might improve imagery.

1. Paint the quills a different color to highlight the part in contrast.

2. Apply dusting powder to cannons.

3. Paint the wheel tread brown.

4. Paint is a little to glossy for my taste.

I really hope this isn't to much but I really like the whole thing. I must give fusion 360 a try. I've been using TurboCad 12 on my Mac which can't output to 3d printers yet.

Sorry, they look like they’re made from plastic….oh…🤣The glossy color doesn’t seem very authentic. I guess I’m a scoffer.

Good ideas.

I will apply some weathering to the cannons and see what I can do about the glossy finish. let me see if I have some dullcoat around.

I downloaded Fusion 360 and have not worked in 3D solids only 2D. This is going to take a learning curve even after watching the videos. Is the red color in the plastic or paint? Just casually looking at Fusion 360 last night I can see how much work these must have been. Do you do your own printing?

Krylon make a flat crystal clear spray coating that I've used with good results and is available at Lowes type stores.

The red is in the paint.

I do my own printing and have a Prusa MK3.

If you follow the first tutorial through and design your own you will get a good handle on using Fusion 360. It took me three walk throughs before I got some of it down.

Did some weathering with my AK Interactive weathering pencils. I may tone it down a bit on the carriages.

Left side is before and right is weathered.

So I am installing the cannonades on the deck and have a stupid question:

There are 6 gun ports on each side for them (7 if you count the ones at the bow) but only 5 are installed on each side.

Did they not want to put a cannon at each gun port?

Check the plans!

They call for two long guns in the forward ports, but there is some debate about this..

I'll get you the discussion from the prototype build..

Yes but that makes 12 guns for 14 gun ports.

Not all ports were used.   You will always have extra ports.  Resist the urge to fill them all up if you want to keep it accurate.

Oops..

My bad..

I have the plans, but haven't built..

They call for 5 carronades per side ...

You would have to ask Chuck why not 6..  I'm sure he was following some reference he has..

(I see chuck has spoken while i was composing )

OK it just struck me as odd they didn't use all the ports.

Must have been a reason for this. Maybe not enough crew to man them?

Just being curious...

My blocks, deadeyes and cleats came in from Syren. Also purchased the brass from Great Hobbies here in the great white north.

I started to do the cannon rigging with the 1/8 blocks. Wow these are tiny.

Will have to go back and redo what I had planned as the length of the hooks are way too long so I have to remake them as they need to be shorter.

This is going to take some time and thinking.

Yes! You're right about the size being smaller that you imagined. Another rigging I'm doing is using 2.5mm blocks (almost 3/32") and appreciate your dilemma.

Good Luck you"ll get it.

Fun with rope coils.

I decided to see if I could make the rope coils better and tried the way that was posted by someone here by making the coil on some tape and then using watered down white glue to set it.

PXL_20210829_144412674.thumb.jpg.260ce7cc186945607fc13c6fb3100b2f.jpg

Since the test looked good I used some alcohol to remove the coils I had made and redid them with the cannonades I had already rigged.

PXL_20210829_150556687.thumb.jpg.a4d26e2aa84057cec0152d9ee2dee565.jpg

I like the looks of these better and even though they take some time to do it is worth it in my mind.

PXL_20210829_154855740.thumb.jpg.1ba70d2f6e84f2779123764aa03dcb68.jpg

I am using scotch tape for this and wonder if there is a low tack double sided tape that would make this easier.

So all of the rope coils are finished for the ten smaller cannons.

Not hard to do once you get a rhythm going.

Cleats!

My fingers hurt from sanding these down and there are a few extra somewhere as they either dropped into no mans land or flew away somewhere.

I have them mounted and painted though and will celebrate with a chocolate bar.

Started making the chainplates.

How I did it is a little backwards that what Chuck says to do but I found it easier.

First I ground down the part that will be bent with the dremel holding the piece with pliers as they will get hot.

PXL_20210903_205101395.thumb.jpg.d16e42fb3f4e07887606e7b2763ac502.jpg

Then finish filing the end to make it even and mark the length.

PXL_20210903_205144208.thumb.jpg.5a507fe5fccd65c57179b9a0f9ad93bf.jpg

Then cut to length.

PXL_20210903_205303479.thumb.jpg.f88a2c8c8f57942cfbeef8006f0bb6b9.jpg

Round off the bottom and drill the holes.

PXL_20210903_205438418.thumb.jpg.c6b77c832ff10eba1449709b7dc8ebe6.jpg

And before bending the end I want to heat it up until it changes color. This way it softens the metal so it bends easier.

PXL_20210903_210220435.thumb.jpg.4fd310273289856108a99a2c0206bed2.jpg

Then bend it around a round wire. You can see the color difference from the heat treating.

PXL_20210903_212637823.thumb.jpg.60a664b9a00695c9f4117547fa841cd2.jpg

I haven't decided if I am going to solder the end or glue it. Once I finish all of them I will probably solder them.

I haven't read this far in the monograph so I can look forward to the fun. Very nice process and the results look good. Soldering is the way to go and how will you blacken them?

I agree with soldering.

I will paint them black after using automotive grey primer. Just not sure how to hold them for painting yet.
