Harry,

The guns look just fine to me. They are parallel  to the deck and to each other. When everything is painted they will look perfect.

Rod

Thanks Rod,

Moving on with the build.... 🙂

Location of parts over multiple "Issues" takes time and careful consideration. (Final Turret components.)

Not a rapid build at all.... Never mind, it's not a race either.... 🙂

Cheers and Regards,

Harry.

Hi All,

Update:

Completed Main and Secondary Turrets and Guns.

Lots of masking and tiny bits of PE for the Secondary Turrets.

The only problem was dropping a small plastic Periscope for one of the Mains. I searched for a ages but to no avail.

Made a replacement from a bit of sprue, not perfect but they are so small that I don't think anyone will notice.

I think that the Mains could do with a bit of a "Tickle" where the wooden circular bases have a "Step."

I'll give all Turrets some Semi Gloss to protect.

To round off the day, I'll finish constructing the Forward Mast and have a play with the Boats.... 🙂

Cheers....HOF.

Hi All,

Bit of an update, HOF has been working on Ships Boats.... 🙂

So, seven of the eleven are now what I'm going to call complete.

Two Dinghy's and two Longboats were easiest until I decided to re-paint the internals with Vallejo "Wood Grain"

A very careful removal of the PE was a heart in mouth time....

The Motorboat was next being the smallest, tiny PE but a good learning....

Two Launches, quite complex but I got through o.k.

(The Bow PE piece did not want to play nicely at all so I made my own from Brass Wire for both Launches.)

All propellers were a pain to fit onto thier Shafts, in the end, I opened up the hole in the center of the Prop, it made things so much simpler.

The Boats look a little untidy, (In my mind.), up close but look much better viewed "Normally" if that makes sense.

(My hat is very firmly off to those that build 1/700 scale!! 🙂)

I now have the four "Service" Boats to complete and I guess on to Forward Superstructure PE. (Unless I go down another Part-work rabbit hole!!)

Cheers....HOF.

Hi All,

Small update:

HOF has been playing with Boats again.... 🙂

Spent the day finishing the four Service Boats.

These went together o.k., not too much PE, just enough to keep me honest!!

As I mentioned to Rod, (rvchima), these won't be mounted on the Ship for some time yet but good to have them complete.

(It's another 4 magazine "Issues" out of the way.)

Eleven Ships Boats total count.

I think tomorrow, I'll deal with a partly consumed PE fret containing components for the Funnel Searchlight Platforms and a coupe of Ventilators that will get mounted on the main Hanger....

Cheers....HOF.

Hi All,

Small update:

I have fallen into a bit of a "Part-Works" Rabbit Hole....

Not too bad though....

Got through two further "Issues" but took me a couple of days.

  • Constructed and installed a couple of Ventilators, Port/Starboard by the Main Hanger Doors. (Why this could not have been a molding, we'll never know.)
  • Constructed and installed Searchlight Platforms Port/Starboard funnel, (11 PE pieces each) Platform,), and installed Searchlight Covers.

I am now left with a complete PE Fret that covers the previous two "Issues" that deal with the Admirals Bridge and associated Conning Tower.

I am pretty sure that I'll get this out of the way before Sheathing the Forward Superstructure.

I'll post some photos after the Conning Tower PE is attended to.

Cheers....HOF.

Hi All,

Small update:

I'm about 1/2 way through installing the PE sub-structures on the Conning Tower, more tiny bits to go....

Admirals Bridge Platform and Railings complete and given a bit of paint as this will be covered.

That's about the size of it for the morning.    🙂

Cheers.... HOF.

Forgot to mention,

I'll have to develop someting to hold the Conning Tower....

The more PE that gets added and the more "Protrusions" the easier that it is to accidentally knock something off!!

(Been there, done that.... 😀)

I'm thinking of a blob of "Blutack" on the plastic base onto a small block of wood....

Those supports on the side of the funnel are really hard. Congrats on completing that bit.

Rod

Thanks Chap,

They are not prefect but they will do.

I agree, they were a ral pain..

I am finding that the PE for the Conning Tower is more of a challenge....

I should be able to complete this step today, (Hopefully), but not all of it as this is the method that Partworks use, they  "jump around...."

If I try and complete fully, I'm going to have yet more bits to "Put aside."

I found the Hanger Boat instructions in the next installment,, (119), and, the Jig.... We'll see how that goes....🙂

(As you found, it looks like I'll have to move the Ladders on the Hanger.)

Hi All,

Small update:

PE now complete on the lower Conning Tower. (Don't know why the instruction call this a "Mast.")

When I say complete, I left 4 pieces off, Webs under the Central PE Platform, no biggie, no one will notice or look for that matter.

I managed to break the RHS Rear Platform Railing, so made a replacement from 0.5mm Brass Wire, as with both Rear Platform outer Rails, I got fed up with trying to balance these on the Platform edge waiting for the CA to set-up and after loosing one to the "Carpet Monster" I decided to make my own.

Don't know what the Rectangular protrusions are on the Rear Platforms but the instructions call for them to "Articulate" and they do....🙂

The whole structure in "The Raw" looks really scrappy but I think that a judicial application of Acetone and  dose of Light Grey will make things a whole lot better and hide the misdemeanors.. (I'll do that tomorrow morning.)

I found this structure really "Fiddly" and did not assist with my usually calm countenance. 🙂

(It's also reasonably fragile, so care necessary when handling.)

Cheers....HOF.

Hi All,

Cleaned up and gave the Conning Tower and gave it a dose of Primer.

Not perfect but better than it was.... 🙂

(It is what it is.... Just noticed in one of the photos the top PE ring on the Starboard side needs a "Tweak.")

I can now move on with another "Issue."

I think that I'll have a go at the Hanger Boat supports and see how that goes....

Amati/Partworks supplied a bit of strip wood to construct a Jig for these.

Cheers....HOF.

Sorry to plague you with Conning Tower photos....

I need to stop "Stressing!!"

I placed the Conning Tower structure on the Forward Superstructure.

Once done, any tiny errors disappear with the sheer size of the Ship.... 🙂

I guess I'm being over critical and striving for perfection.

I have to remind myself that this project is also my first serious foray in the use of Photo Etch.

Hi All,

Small update:

Decided to assemble the "Service Boat" storage racks that will be positioned either side of the Main Hanger.

(The other two Service Boats are accommodated on the Hanger Roof.)

I assembled the Jig last night and used some candle wax on the surfaces of the Jig that would be exposed to CA.

The Jig worked o.k. in terms of correct spacings but required a small clamp to prevent things moving around.

(Even though I have not yet fitted the Racks yet, I'm reasonably confident they'll fit with ought too many issues.)

Cheers....HOF.

First of all, I love the photos with all of the PE pieces laying around on the black background. It looks like you took a fire cracker to your model like we all did when we were kids.

Second, I don't know what those things are either, but they are a pain to deal with and just hang off into space on the finished tower. You could consider just gluing them down.

Finally, your jig for the lifeboat racks is brilliant! I wish that you had gone first so I could copy. Now be careful not to bump those flimsy rails.

Thanks Chap.

The reason that I bothered to post this was that the Amati kit does not seem to provide a Jig for this particular element but the Amati/Partwork version does.

So, in order for those attempting the Amati Version, they may wish to construct the Jig.

Very interesting! It's too late for me but it might help someone else if you could post a drawing for the jig.

Hi All,

Small update:

So, progress has been a little slow, due in no small part, to battling the COVID thing.... ☹️

I climbed back into it today and made a start on the forward Superstructure. (Jumping back many issues.... After clearing the Decks and placing sub-assemblies into secure storage to mitigate any accidents....)

The exposed Decks, (No Printed Deck covering), I gave a dose of Sanding Sealer as I want to minimize any grain showing through post painting these areas. (I extended this to the Aft superstructure "Painted" deck areas as well.)

Up until now, I had not attached the Fore Superstructure Decks, (1st Tier), I am pleased that I did so as the aft structure was slightly "Racked" but pulled into alignment with lots of clamps....

I guess when I sheath this stuff it will show any issues, I hope not!!

About six "Issues" should see the Brass sheathing more or less completed.

So, onward.... I'll post some photos in the next few days.

Cheers....HOF.

Thanks Chap,

It's my first model ship with "Guns.... 🙂"

As mentioned somewhere near the start of the log, I spent so much "Coin," NZD $16.95 per issue X 140 issues), years ago, seeing other Bismarck builds here, It piqued my interest in this, time to carry on with it.

Yup, it is "Fiddly" very.... However, I needed to learn more, esp. Photo Etch.

(It's not that small at around 1.4 meters but the PE and other aspects tends to be at 1/200.)

A bit of a departure from models with "No Plastic" bits, (Multi-Media) I think it'll come out o.k. in the end.

The 'Sickness" has thankfully run its' course..... 🙂
