This will be the largest model I will ever make. A little  smaller would have been more manageable.
But yeah,  why not 😇

I'm definitely watching your magnificent build before going much further on the Great Harry, and I'm intent on jumping into a rigging restoration on an old Gorch Fock model in the mean time.

Completed builds:  Khufu Solar Barge - 1:72 Woody Joe

Current project(s): Gorch Fock restoration 1:100, Billing Wasa (bust) - 1:100 Billings, Great Harry (bust) 1:88 ex. Sergal 1:65

'I see', said the blind man, as he picked up his hammer and saw.  I'd like to complete the restoration by Christmas ... early next year at the latest, and given that my MO is often to jump from one project to another (I'm a grazer) I'll likely do more on the other two ships in the yard before then.  As many have said, "Its not a race" ... and its the 'journey' that counts.

planking.
Because planking with only the bulkheads as support every 6cm is very inconvenient. I'm going to place the frames of the gun ports first before continuing with planking.

First I determine where they should go and how wide the cannonports are.

Measure on the drawing and transfer to the model (drawing 1/100, model 1/50, so just multiply by 2).

And the dimensions stated in the book correspond well with the drawing.

I think I'm going to fill in a bit of the bow for support. Later on you won't see anything between the stem and the first bulkhead on this deck.
The shape remains quite pointed towards the top20230801_073306_1280.jpg.d02d565acebf51dcd91ba89d1340810c.jpg20230731_200557_1280.jpg.e1f080901fc9c75943359835a74db977.jpg20230731_200617_1280.jpg.7c00caae5da78186f052a8d28c26fb0a.jpg

In accordance with findings on the wreck and paintings from that time, there will also be a cannon at the front.
provisionally called Mx

Placing the gun ports now is a very good idea Baker, will help a lot down the track.  I also filled in much of the dead space between bulkheads, especially in the bow and stern, with my Endeavour build - it helped a lot.

cheers

With the holidays over, time to start up again.
The second wale has now been placed. So now the planking between wale 2 and 3 can begin along with working out the gun ports.
Only the hatches of the gun ports have been found on the port side. and it turns out that they did not always have the same dimensions as the starboard side. Discovered too late to adjust, so they stay as they are now.

(On their drawings in scale 1/100 they are neatly the same width on both sides...grrr...)

20230827_091136_1280.thumb.jpg.f8f9f6528aa12bfe9d0e01c505a22eb2.jpg20230827_091236_1280.jpg.3914790f938a698ac5c8e4f99339cd95.jpg

The bow cannon should fire fairly well forward (see drawing of the Great Harry). And between the stern and this gun are only 2 planks and not 3 as further aft.

20230801_140414_1280.jpg.9b2bd9bb44c57169510a33a084d53741.jpg

I accidentally came across this while chopping wood. The right shape as support for the bow area.

20230801_192948_1280.jpg.c4dd34a0109ca5d8fa9d04afebbfafd3.jpg

Planking between wale 2 and 3 has started. I started on the port side, nothing left of this side. So this is the big exercise before starting on the starboard side.

Still a bit messy and a lot of thinking, touch up and sanding, but it seems to be going well this way.

The planking on the port side is done, and the cannonports are installed.

Small update

The planking of the starboard side goes smoothly.
The bulk heads are adjusted in advance and the frames of the cannon ports were already partly made.
It's simply taking the dimensions from the port side to the starboard side and start planking.
and the laser also comes in handy.

I had some sawing work for another project and so I sawed wood for the base plate.

No a post about progress, but solving a "wale mistery".

In a previous post I was annoyed by the strange shape of the wale.

image.png.58170744f90533607c48e9f4f33bb087.png

well, solution found.
the notch at the top does have a reason. This prevents water on the wale from seeping in between the seam of the wale and the plank above it.

Don't you love those 'Ah ha' moments? It always amazes me that shipwrights did things a certain way and that there was always a logical reason behind it.

Planking update

The planking between wale 2 and 3 is ready and has received a first sanding.
The intention is to apply 3 more strakes above wale 3 and then sand the hull further and finish it with nails, treenails, etc.

Part of the plywood bulkheads are also removed.

The base plate

Now that the hull is still easy to handle, the base plate is first made. The material is oak (recycled)

The ships stand is ready, currently with a temporary name on it.

20231010_182313_1280.jpg.708549e61f1c4e03881d526cdf0481fe.jpg

the planking above wale 3 went quite smoothly.

20231013_171352_1280.jpg.da0e01d55d69411934fe83875a988821.jpg

But,

The frame of section 1 is strongly bent inwards at the top. And the stem is straight at the top.

20231010_182217_1280.jpg.28a3d120c0dd8dfd46243fd329cba593.jpg

This result is an unnatural shape of the hull20231013_171429_1280.jpg.38780527a7acc2d4b188ae3424e561d5.jpg

So, removing these planks and start again for attempt 2. The advantage of PVA glue is that it softens again if you carefully apply isopropyl alcohol to the glue seams.
The planks can then be removed fairly easily.

Attempt 2 : better

20231014_165841_1280.jpg.31ea399d1b1a3e76ff5d0feb05e2ac41.jpg

But...

I think I tapered the planks between wale 2 and 3 too much.
Wale 3 currently has no smooth line. I'm considering attempt 3 (this means more redoing)   :default_wallbash:

Your persistence and attention to detail (and re-doing when you're not satisfied) are a credit to ship modellers everywhere.

And far from the tubby stereotype people have of ships of this period, this hull is elegant and shapely. She's beautiful!

Thank you .
The "demolition work" has now been completed successfully on both sides. And the (3rd attempt) reconstruction is going in the right direction.
If everything goes according to plan, an update will be released over the weekend

The wale 3 problem has been solved. This now has a more flowing line towards the bow.

The front cannon port has also been modified. Like ports 2 through 6, is the opening now to just below the wale.
