Mary Rose by Baker - scale 1/50 - "Your Noblest Shippe"

Recommended Posts

Looking at Figures 1 and 10 in Post #48 and assuming that baker's wide planks are correctly routed, I don't think that too narrow plank ends at the bow should be avoided here.

Would planks that end half as wide really be narrower than the ones underneath?

It's looking really good so far - nothing to complain about - quite the contrary.

But I was wondering what you had planned for the forecastle. As you're probably aware, I have a bit of a "thing" about the forecastle. Earlier models, such as the one at the Mary Rose Museum and the available kits have a forecastle reminiscent of a galleon, but more recent opinion is that the shape was much closer to that shown in the Anthony Roll and in many "great carracks" of the time, such as the vessels pictured in the painting of the Santa Catarina do Monto Sinai and the Venetian ivory from the tomb of Alessandro Contarini of 1553 (below)

Do not worry.
There will be the fore castle of a carrack. In the version as on the cover of the book.

Tanks for the comments. This is much appreciated 👍

The idea is to apply the iron nails and the treenails. And not to paint the hull white below the waterline.
The original MR may have had white stuff below the waterline. But this has never really been investigated.
There will be no whipstaff on the tiller in this era.

Might I suggest that iron is not a good idea to use in any model. It will rust and stain the wood over time. This can be seen in many old models. Use either chemically blackened brass or copper wire. Some model makers use black synthetic line.

Good idea Druxey
But, I can't work with copper and brass.

I have new artificial lenses in both my eyes (cataract surgery). One of the side effects are halos and after 9 years I still suffer from them.
Small shiny objects shine so hard under a lamp that I can't see what I'm doing.
Small blackened iron nails are just about to succeed. All other "metal" objects will be made in painted plastic.

It is what it is.

There was no turning back after the surgery :)

And, me, a military modeller. A little rust here and there...😉

Great point, so an alternative might be stainless steel wire pushed into a pre-drilled hole so only the head shows.  That will stay bright for a long while, versus a blackened look some seek, but will be differetiable from wood tree nails to an observer.  I suppose thin black plastic rod is an alternative ... if the stock is too thick to begin with, one can heat and stretch over a flame by pulling on both ends as it softens.  Or (another option) is to color the end of a wooden tree nail black (whether tooth pick or something else), since only the end will show.

Small planking update.

With the experience already gained, much less has to be calculated and noted on the fillerblocks.
The dimensions of the other side are simply taken over on this side.

The planking of the lower hull part is ready. This morning everything is made ready for sanding and scraping.

In the meantime I did the garden, washed the cars and did other small jobs (the regular Saturday work..)

After a day of sanding in the sun, the lower part of the hull is sanded. Also the keel and stem are tapered.

All the screws holding Mary Rose upside down have been removed. And i gave her a cleaning with compressed air.

20230718_134410_1280.thumb.jpg.51f24c6158fa9f77a5aa5c82764c6cec.jpg

Since there is little left of the stem. it was a bit of free interpretation.

A new building  slip and start planking between wale 1 and 2.

The aim of the new building slip is to give the model good support and to keep it fully accessible.
The result is a bit big and unwieldy. But solid

20230721_112455_1280.jpg.1a7e274cf8329eaedd885c0528fccbf0.jpg
Align the front and back with the laser.

The 1st wale did not have a smooth line here and there.
In these places the glue has been loosened with isopropyl alcohol and adjusted

20230721_120240_1280.jpg.3eb634d09ca3bdeac7b0ba03a948a1a3.jpg20230722_112905_1280.jpg.88f30aecd59d5da58598072fd5e19ae6.jpg

Measure whether the dimensions match the cross-sections.

Only 1mm difference here and there :Whew:

20230722_154222_1280.jpg.41efab65d35ce13b72ade4847985c34c.jpg

Start further planking.

The intention is to do 2 strakes and maybe the 2nd wale. This will then serve as a basis to replace all the plywood with wooden frames.

The first plank
