Thanks for the positive feedback on the sails, Keith. It really helps!

Thanks Paul: I think you're right, but I'm afraid I would really like to see her finished and in a proper display case. Visitors keep saying I must have amazing patience, but sometimes I wonder. 🙂

And a warm thankyou to all those who have attached 'likes'!

She inspires me anew, John. Sometimes it's the journey and not the destination that is important. I am certainly enjoying this one.

Another update. The 'Duchess' continues to grow sails. First two on the mizzen mast. The cro'jack is rigged, the lower topsail merely crossed at this stage, but at least she looks a little more balanced with sails on all three of the forward masts.

Absolutely impressive work, John. A joy to behold for sure, and who gives a hoot about the background (shouldn't be looking at it anyway with this beauty in front of you!)

Another small update. The mizzen upper topsail is now rigged (apart from the halliard), so only 3 more square sails to go and then the 3 sails on the jigger. Of course, there's still a mass of work to do on he after all the sails are on, but at least she'll look more or less like a complete ship then.

This will probably be the last update for some time. We're off on holiday next week and then I'm up for daily medical treatment for some time after that so that will stop me getting to the museum for a while.

Enjoy the holiday John. You've done a great job with the restoration.  So many people will now see her (if not yet complete) in a whole new light but not understand/know the hours of effort put into her.

cheers

Thank you for your comments and concern, gentlemen. I must say I'm looking forward to a bit of a break - this has been a much bigger project than I had first imagined, and I've been putting a lot of time in.

As for the upcoming treatment, it's akin to pulling up a single weed roots and all before it can grow into a whole garden of weeds. Side effects should be minimal and each days treatment is short, but having to be at the hospital during the day means (obviously) that I can't be at the museum.

The 'Duchess' will wait patiently in her temporary case.

John.

I see the housing of the boiler room got a door, as this housing is fully occupied by a cochran boiler. Herzogin Cecilie never had any doors from the poop deck

Hello everyone,

My name is Eileen, I'm studying to become a naval architect and I'm currently doing research on Herzogin Cecilie.

I've found a lot of writing about it, especially in this book

Derby, William Lenson Arnold. The Tall Ships Pass: The Story of the Last Years of Deepwater Square-Rigged Sail, Embodying Therein the History and Detailed Description of the Finnish Four Masted Steel Barque “Herzogin Cecilie.” With Internet Archive. Newton Abbot, David & Charles, 1970. http://archive.org/details/tallshipspasssto0000derb.

I have not found many drawings though, and I'm looking to remodel the hull in 3D.

I've seen that you've been working on this great model and I am looking for the drawings,

Do you know where I could find them or who could have them ?

Have lovely day,

Eileen

A very limited set of plans can be found here: http://www.digipeer.de/index.php?sf=0&al=Herzogin+Cecilie

They are drawings held in the Deutsche Schiffahrtsmuseum Bremerhaven.

I am not sure what happend to the archives of the Rickmers shipyard, which finally closed in 1986, whether they survived the bombings during WW2. The International Maritime Instiute Hamburg, which had a financially potent founder/sponsor, managed to buy out many shipyard archives, but Rickmers does not seem to be among them.

In a way it is strange that not much in terms of original resources seem to have survived, as she was quite a prominent ship in Germany before WW1.

Eileen, Harold Underhill's plans, which are said to have been redrawn from the original yard plans, are available through various dealers online. Just google 'Herzogin Cecilie Plans'. Bear in mind that these plans show the ship 'as built'. There were major changes made during her long life. Our model shows her as she was on her last voyage in 1936.

I always wondered, where Underhill found some of the builders' plans. For instance, I researched some years ago the background to his drawings of the 1879 wooden brig MARIE SOPHIE, the last built in Germany, but the only thing I could find was an old model of her in the maritime museum in Brake (near her birthplace). He didn't provide information on the location of the respective plans.

Had a bit of a break between our holiday and starting treatment, so here's a final final update for a while! 🙂

The mizzen upper topgallants are now rigged and the sharp eyed might also notice that the fore lower shrouds are also sporting ratlines. Only one more square sail to go and then the full ratline, lower sheet, brace thing happens, plus some deck details I can't put on yet.

The 'Duchess' will hopefully return to active duty in mid November!
