Dear friends,

after finishing of Revenge 1577 I decided to continue again with scratch build - not with another "war monster", but with two small ships, two of Columbus fleet, which returned back from the New World for the first time.

I used free plans from MODELARSTWO OKRETOWE web page ( http://www.modelarstwookretowe.pl/index.php?p=44 ) for Nina  ( there are downloadable plans for Santa Maria too ) and made projection for Pinta based on the same plan and pictures of model made from MO plan. I will also change sail plan  on Nina - all of sails will be latin.

I absolutely forget to start a new thread here ( shame on me :D ), now I´m in progress of hulls planking.  Bottom parts of hulls and decks are just finished. There are three layers of cartoon planking already - I want to make extremely strong and smooth hull ( there are only first and last layer taken on pfotos - the second one I glued across the first ). Upper parts of hull sides will be make from one piece of thick cartoon each one.

Here are some pictures from the progress.

Thanks for your photos.

Very nice work there! Love the fact that you're building it in 1/96 scale. It just adds to the challenge of building when it's a miniature, like yours. I"m also intrigued by the method of hull construction and planking that you're using. Is it cardboard?

Look forward to seeing the finished products!

Thank you, my friends, for your replies.

dgbot: I´m using just cardstock, for surface finishing ( decks, planking imitation etc. ) I´m using strips of foils - just like Doris is doing ( I learned this method from her :) ) I´m using wood just for masts and yards.

Karleop, Omega 1234: The scale 1:96 is normal for me, I´ve build all of my ships in this scale and I don´t want to change it. It´s just fact that these two are quite small :) Most of my ships is quite big ( La Couronne is about 80 cm long )

Here are two photos for comparison: Pinta and Revenge, both hulls and La Couronne.

Upper parts of hulls are done, and the last part of planking is applied. I allways use four layers of planking - as I said, I want to have the extremely strong and smooth hull.

Here are some photos of the result.

I started with imitation of wooden planking by strips of foil ( This is Dorisis´  method of planking - I learned it from her years ago ;)  )

The patination of planking will follow.

What an interesting method to do the planking. It looks like real wood.  Where do you get the foil or for what purpose is it made?

Congratulations, Karl

Thank you, friends, for your replies.

I use self - adhesive plastic foils with wooden structure of surface. ( I use the same method of planking like Doris )

I patinated planking by brown anilin water color and painted them by colourless matt Revell paint , I think the surface of models looks much more better now. Keels will follow.

Just small progress before easter - I made windlasses, ladders and covers ( not gratings - I´m quite sure there weren´t gratings ).

Ok, ok, ok...I keep coming back to the early photos on Page 1 of this log and I still can't get my head around the fact that these models are built from card! Truly magnificent work, Firdajan.

I'm learning so much from builds such as yours, especially how clean and precise the hull planking using foils have turned out. Really top stuff.

All the best.

I´m working slowly - but still ;)  Main parts of standing rigging is done. I have just to finish it - and start with propulsion :dancetl6:

Tank you, my friends :)

avsjerome2003: I know Doris well, and, believe me, I really learned a lot from her. Her work and models were also one of reasons I start wit shipmodeling after 20 years again ;)

Yards are finished  ( just three on each ship :D )- and now I can start with first part of running rigging - the second one with sails ( BTW, I changed sails to latin on Nina - in plans are the same sails for Pinta as for Nina ).

Here are some pics.

First part of the running rigging is finished. Now I can continue with sails - and the second part of the running rigging.

( ...and with anchors, rudders and flags.......It seems that ships will be finished very soon :dancetl6: )

Here are some pictures I took today.
