Thanks B.E. I have been following along with your Pegasus and hopefully one day I will be able to pull something like that off.  Your small boats are looking great.

Thank you Pete.  I was supprised at how light the wood was for the decking.  I did use a HB pencil for the "caulking line".  Overall I think it looks not too bad.  I am working a bit over next 10 days or so so things going to slow down but will be tackling the foredeck stuff next.  I have lots time at the end of the moth for the shipyard :)

Cheers

Thanks Alistair.  When I first saw the grating pieces I wasn't too impressed but after setting them up with the planking, adding the windlass etc, I think they look much better.

She looks incredible Michael, I read through the entire build log and it is truly an impressive piece of work.

Thanks Divarty.  I was checking out your cross section and cannot believe how small it is.  From the first few pictures I thought it was at least 12 inches tall.  The ruler really surprised me :)

  • 2 weeks later...

So I finally got a bit of time and was able to get the forecastle stuff done.  I need to do a wipe on poly session and blacken the cannons/stack.

Quarterdeck next.  Waterways, bulwark planking, deck planking, hatch, bits, and companionway.

Poop deck only has a bit of bulwark planking and the preparation for the rudderpost hole thingy.

Thanks Pete. Today is the "smelly" day. At least it is nice outside and kinda cool so the poly will be easier to deal with. I like sitting on the back patio working on this.

So more binnacle.  I was able to get the rear sliding doors done as well as the front companionway doors done.

Here is the pumps.  The instructions state should use a piece of supplied styrene for the handles.  Then paint it "any color of brown to give it a wood color".  Instead I carved them from some planking stock.  I think the result was pretty good.

Nice clean work. Your doing an excellent job. Hmm i agree the handles could be turn a little more, but your the Boss it's your call. Keep the pictures coming.

Thanks Wacko.  Both the plans and the Hahn book The Colonial Schooner show the pump handles angles forward about 45deg off midline.

Really nicely done Michael. Everything looks very crisp and clean. Good call on making the pump handles from wood..

Bob

Thank you. I have never used styrene before and since I don't have any "wood colored paint" I thought it would just be easier to make it out of wood.  Your Essex is an inspiration and is the answer to the next question that Carl had.  A partially planked deck can look very nice.

Everything looks great.  What made you decide to only plank the port front quarter of the deck?

Thanks Carl. I am not sure I really like the planking on this ship.  Here is a picture form the kits picture disk. (This is not mine)  This is how the instructions have you plank it.

And I just don't like that look too much.  Personal preference I guess.  For the last month I have been thinking of this problem.  Bob's (username rafine) Essex looks awesome and also has a partially planked deck over frames.  I have considered planking entire port side, just center strip, leaving as is, etc.  Haha just don't know.  Eventually I will have to make a decision.
