KA-6 Australia II (1983) By Pete48 - SMALL 3/16" = 1' - 0 "

Recommended Posts

I could not help it, Today the Boxing Kangaroo was calling me to work on her . So I thought ok for an hour or so . 10  Hours later here is the build log. I started by truing up all the frames and making sure all the alignments are correct. ( square is square and level is level ) anyone new to scratch building, this is one of the most critical parts to the build ( you get it wrong here, you are fighting it all the way to the mast )Once I was pleased with the frame alignment I glued them in position . while the glue was drying ( I know that I said a hull only build ) I decided to use the plans and lay out the deck , ( I am thinking about a clear varnish over it ) at the same time I decided to make a new transom . I then installed the deck to the Keel and frames , followed by the transom . I then made frame 11 ( 2 pieces ) and installed them. I then started to fair the frames . This Boxing Kangaroo is right on the money , She's is incredibly fun to build , it's hard to put her down . here are the results ( alot of pics )

Hi Pete. Very, very nice. How do you manage to spend so much uninterrupted time on your build? Are you lucky enough to be on annual leave, or maybe early retirement? Either way, I envy you because time spent doing something you really enjoy is definitely time well spent!

As for KA6, well, she's looking really good. Do you think that you can really stop at just the hull? You could be tempted to sail her; once you see how well Kate sails...what do you think???

All the best.

Hi Omega, I always have the first few weeks in july off , usually to go Camping with Faimily ( I  got out of it this year ) .The day's to build all day without interuption are few and far between( I think this was the second time )  .On the Boxing Kangaroo,  I will stop at just the hull ,she's just too small .  I may do a bigger cup boat in the future that will sail .( we shall see )

Best Regards,

Pete

The Planking will come next after the fairing the frames is finished, I have started to think about the Famous winged keel (wich is a key element to this build )

Today, I Got back to work on the Boxing Kangaroo. I started by putting 2 thin coats of varnish on the deck ( to protect the deck layout ) I then had errands to run ,wich gave the varnish plenty of time to dry. When I returned I finished fairing the frames , She is now ready for planking . She's  right on the money with Ben Lexcen's Drawing . Here are the results

Thank you Robert, Planking should go smooth, the frames faired well

Hi Omega,  planking is one of my favorite parts of the Build, It's when she really takes shape. The hull will be painted white with the blue Keel Accents ( intresting to leave it Natural)

Thank you Michael, She's coming together pretty quik

Pete

Today, I was able to do one of my faforite parts of the build ( Planking ) I started by soaking my planking material an rubbing alcohol, I do this because alcohol evaporates faster than water esp. when it's 90 degrees farenheight outside . I let them soak for about an hour and started plankihng , The only trickey part is at the transom, it all went together smoothly I planked the boat all the way to the Keel and started Fairing the Hull , Here are the results,  That was fun

Thank you John,  This Boxing Kangaroo has been extremely fun to build, so it's hard to stop working on her

Thank you Omega, that section was a bit trickey ( I have a great drawing of the boat ) So it was easy to see how the lines come together , executing it was trickey

Hi Keith , I am not going to stop now, the winged keel looks to be the most challenging part of the build, I am excited to start on it

Hi David , the Hull will be painted white < so I went with Bass Wood for the planking

Thank's Jay , I should have some pic's of the Keel tonight, ( fun Stuff)

Thank you Michael, The Winged Keel is very exciting for me , As I have never done one before, Well I never built a 12 meter before either . Lot's of first's for me on this build

Best Regards,

Pete

Looks great Pete.

There'd be few Australians who remember the day 'we' won the cup who wouldn't get a smile on their face just by hearing the name Australia II or see the boxing kangaroo flag... I was only 9 and it was BIG news at the time.

Bob Hawke is 84 and can still skull a 'schooner' of beer with the best of 'em (likely to be a few videos on YouTube) - a skill he honed in his University days, a Rhodes scholar I think.

A schooner of beer? There's a bit of history to the actual amount, but these days is a glass of 425ml...

"...the origin of the term, although unknown, is suggested by the comments of a magistrate in a 1931 Sydney court case. A city publican was proceeded against for supplying a schooner of beer instead of a pint. The aggrieved customer was found to be legally entitled to a full pint in a stamped measure if he asked for a pint; he should receive a ‘full-rigged ship’, not a lesser fore-and-aft rigged schooner." From http://www.brewsnews.com.au/2011/01/schooner-wars/ (fws)

Cheers

Leanne

Next build: US Brig Syren...maybe :)

Thank you Leanne, I was 16 at that time , I grew up in a Sailing Family and had my first solo at 6 , So the Americas Cup was bigger than any other sport in our house.  the Cup was bolted down for 132 years in New York Yacht Club, so to see an inovative yacht come in and force 7 races was spectacular, and the winged Keel taking center stage made for a great story

Today was the day to start the Winged Keel, To say it is difficult would be an understatement. ( this is the first one that I have done or even a Cup boat for that matter) I first finished Fairing the hull to the Keel line , Next I cut frames for the Keel, Then I made the wings, On the frames, I notched in the wing angle , I then used scarp to fill in the spaces between the frames . I got the front 2 sections of the keel finished . I still have the aft section of the Keel with the trim tab fo finish followed by Fairing the Keel ,The Wings have not been glued in at this time, This is an amazingly well designed Boat.  Here are the results
