Tom your ship is really looking great. Got a question for you. On post 261 you lowered the air port holes and I was just wondering if that was because they were close to the top of the Wales? I'm getting ready to drill the holes for my Connie and was just checking. Thanks a lot. Greg H.

J I think the main difference in the two woods you mentioned would be the color. The pear wood is a little darker Greg H.

On cleaning your deck you might try a thinned top coat. Your ship looks great by the way.

I haven't got to that stage yet of putting the copper strips on. I would probably paint the red stripe first and extend it down a little so the copper plates would cover the bottom edge and make a nice clean line. Greg H.

Phill that's a great idea you have there. Thanks for sharing with us. Greg H. -
Jaager I think you're right about the cypress. I'm a woodworker and I picked the cypress because I had some laying around. It looks nice after I mill it and even when I glue it in place, but during the drying process it moves at different rates so it becomes uneven. I think I will finish to the top of the wale with the cypress and then change wood. The ship will be painted but I still want the wood to look nice so it doesn't telegraph thru the paint. Thanks for your input. Greg H.

Bruce I cut the strips on my Byrnes mini table saw and when I apply the strips they are nice and flat but something is happening during the drying process. I don't know if I'm using too much glue or maybe it's the wood itself. I laid the deck planking using the basswood that came with the kit and had no problem at all.

I am applying cypress planking on my USS Constitution hull and it goes on nice and even but after the glue has dried the surface is very uneven. I am using Weldbond white glue. I don't know if the glue is causing the wood to swell unevenly or not. is anybody else having this problem? If so what have you done to correct it?

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
