  1. Tom I have a question for you if it's ok. When you were doing the framing for your gun ports, did you make the side frames for the gun ports square to the top and bottom gun sills or parallel to the bulkheads? I'm at that stage in my build and have heard two different answers to this. One answer was square to the top and bottom sill and the other was parallel to the bulkheads. I really like the way yours turned out for sure. Thanks Greg H.
  2. Schnu I just discovered your build log. You are doing a fantastic job. Your ship looks great! Keep up the good work. Greg H.
  3. I'm a novice ship builder. I'm working on the USS Constitution by ME.Since I have no experience in ship building the kit was perfect for me. If I had just bought the plans I wouldn't even know where to start but as time has passed I have learned so much from all the talented builders here on MSW. I've learned there is a basic order to building a ship and now after I complete the Conny I will most likely try my hand at scratch building. I think cutting the bulkheads and keel would be the most difficult parts to cut and if you think about it after you assemble the bulkheads and keel from a kit most of the rest of a kit is scratch build. Greg H.
  4. @Christi, good luck in making your tray. Let us know how it turns out. I'm always looking for ideas. Greg H.
  5. The piece you are showing with the hole fits behind the frame you will form first. Look at Usedtosail build log for the USS Constitution. Hope this helps
  6. Tom I read where the rigol or eyebrow was to help deflect water from running directly into the gunport. Greg H.
  7. Bob, daddyrabbit1954 and mischief thank you all for your comments. I truly thank for taking the time to help out a novice ship builder. Greg H.
  8. Tom and Bob thank you both very much Greg H.
  9. I've seen a few people use a magnetic tray for squaring up assemblies for their ships. Just wondering if anyone knows where to buy them? Thanks Greg H.
  10. CaptainSteve your doing a great job. The small boats you started with for this build log are a build log themselves. I'm building a Conny in the background myself. Haven't started a build log. Keep up the great work! Greg H.
  11. That's a nice model. I've never seen a steel model kit before. I learned something new today! Thanks for sharing Greg H.
  12. I'm just thinking out loud. I wonder if you cut some 1/32 wood just slightly smaller than those sail cloth covers and then attached the sail cloth to it then somehow glued the 1/32 wood inside. I haven't tried this I was just trying to think of a way to do it. As I have said before your ship is great and I truly have learned a lot from watching your build log. Greg H.
