Tom I have a question for you if it's ok. When you were doing the framing for your gun ports, did you make the side frames for the gun ports square to the top and bottom gun sills or parallel to the bulkheads? I'm at that stage in my build and have heard two different answers to this. One answer was square to the top and bottom sill and the other was parallel to the bulkheads. I really like the way yours turned out for sure. Thanks Greg H.

Buying an Expensive Kit and throwing most of it away
Burroak replied to pirozzi's topic in Wood ship model kits
I'm a novice ship builder. I'm working on the USS Constitution by ME.Since I have no experience in ship building the kit was perfect for me. If I had just bought the plans I wouldn't even know where to start but as time has passed I have learned so much from all the talented builders here on MSW. I've learned there is a basic order to building a ship and now after I complete the Conny I will most likely try my hand at scratch building. I think cutting the bulkheads and keel would be the most difficult parts to cut and if you think about it after you assemble the bulkheads and keel from a kit most of the rest of a kit is scratch build. I've seen a few people use a magnetic tray for squaring up assemblies for their ships. Just wondering if anyone knows where to buy them? Thanks Greg H.

I'm just thinking out loud. I wonder if you cut some 1/32 wood just slightly smaller than those sail cloth covers and then attached the sail cloth to it then somehow glued the 1/32 wood inside. I haven't tried this I was just trying to think of a way to do it. As I have said before your ship is great and I truly have learned a lot from watching your build log. Greg H.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
