On this day in history 1944, D-Day commences. The Allied powers crossed the English Channel and landed on the beaches of Normandy, France, beginning the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi control during WWII.

Now those are some beautifully done sheaves Michael. Can I ask if that was the 1 mm end mill bit you used? I ask because I'm thinking about buying all of their small bits for just that same type of milling.

Thanks for the link Ken! I'm with you. The beauty's in the details. Especially on a ship like this. A lot of kits even point out that it's good to scratch-build the iron-work for authenticity in the finished product.

Don't know what to say about the gunwales, but with the life-boat, you could use wood-glue, and glue a cradle you can clamp in the vise, to the hull. Then just un-glue it later with rubbing alcohol.

That's outstanding work Ken! Amazing you were able to accomplish a job like that and still have time for your household chores. Next month my budget's going to allow for some lower-priced items, including books, and I'd be grateful for a link to yours. I've heard a lot of great things about it, and it's also on my list. Is there a hard-copy available? I hate reading books on this computer. Cheers

On this day in 1942, the Battle of Midway–one of the most decisive U.S. victories against Japan during World War II–begins. During the four-day sea-and-air battle, the outnumbered U.S. Pacific Fleet succeeded in destroying four Japanese aircraft carriers while losing only one of its own, the Yorktown, to the previously invincible Japanese navy. When the Battle of Midway ended, Japan had lost four carriers, a cruiser and 292 aircraft, and suffered an estimated 2,500 casualties. The U.S. lost the Yorktown, the destroyer USS Hammann, 145 aircraft and suffered approximately 300 casualties. SBD-3 Dauntless on Enterprise's deck Yorktown afire after being hit by a Japanese bomb

I've seen your Constellation Mark, and those LED's set her off beautifully. But what I haven't seen are lighted areas in a cross-section, probably because of the difficulty in hiding the wiring in a visually open area like a cross-section.

The timber-heads turned out good Robb. Not sure what you can do with that myself, except maybe Jesse has an idea since he's already been through it?

Doesn't sound like madness to me Henry. You're just trying to make things as easy on yourself as you can. Makes perfect sense.

Oh, I haven't spotted a lighted cross-section here in any postings yet Jay. Is there another forum you found the idea in? I do know about whole models being lighted though.

Very nice Tom! Were you going to partially plank over the beams, leaving one side or the other open to the gun-deck, or expose the whole area?

She's taking shape nicely Dennis! Like you, I find it a mystery how, with all the detail they DO include with this, that they don't include a simple detail like the chain-gates. I guess it's just another example of the corporate mind. Cheers

Seems like you found an acceptable solution Michael. The one you've got done looks good. That's what's so cool about this forum. You usually don't have to look too far for an answer. Cheers

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
