Congratulations Iraymo on finishing your dory. You did a good job on this model and you overcame a lot of challenges. This may be a male dominated hobby, bit there are some fantastic female builders current and past whose works are masterpieces. In fact, Toni Levine, who is an accomplished ship modeler, is the current chairperson of the Nautical Research Guild. She has several builds on MSW and she is currently designing and building the capstan model that you can obtain from the NRG store. I look forward to following your future builds. You will do great in this hobby. I edited your title to show that your model is finished. This can be done by editing your first post.

Hi Dan and welcome to Model Ship World. You have picked a good model for your re-entry into this hobby. You also have a nice assortment of kits for your future builds. I hope you share your progress with us on your builds. -
Welcome to Model Ship World Nehemiah. It looks like you have a good start in this hobby with your completed builds. Azzoun offered good advice about the Philadelphia Ship Model Society. I have learned a lot from the members of my ship model club and they are always willing to help me. I do hope you start a build log on whatever model you decide to build.

Welcome to Model Ship World Jean Pierre. It looks like the use of CAD is another highly useful tool in a ship modelers tool box. I am looking forward to your designs and its applications in modeling. -
I am sorry to hear about the loss of your father, Many of my tools and books and even a ship model kit were obtained from the estate of ship modelers whose items were donated to our Club to be auctioned off to members. My family knows that when I pass on, they are to donate my ship model supplies, books and kits to my Club to be auctioned off. It will give me great satisfaction to know that my items will be in the hands of ship modelers.

Swann Morton chisel blades.

Is there a good source of these blades and handles in the United States? -

Good fix. Once the interior is filled with risers and thwarts and painted, you will not see the repair.

Looks like it can be fixed with some glue and clamps. Just glue the broken piece back on and once dried, place wood glue between the frame and the plank and clamp until the glue is dry. Be sure to place a scrap of wood between the plank and the clamp so that the clamp does not leave an impression in the plank. You can get good clamps at a very reasonable price from Harbor Freight. You can never have too many clamps. Your model looks good. Do not be too hard on yourself as this model is a learning experience for you.

Hello Jeff and welcome to Model Ship World. Thank you for your service and enjoy your retirement. You have the oldest ship model club in the US that meets in your area, the Washington Ship Model Society. The members turn out some nice models and they are always participating in shows and events in the DC area. Also, check out the US Naval Academy museum in Annapolis that houses the Rogers Collection of ship models. It is one of my favorite areas to visit.

I would stain the model after you have completed the planking and sanding. Here is a link to my Longboat build log where I stained the basswood with Minwax products. The Minwax Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner is a must if you want the stain to cover evenly. The Syren built by Chuck Passaro was built using basswood and this is how he explained how he stained his model. Unfortunately, his Syren build log on MSW was lost in the great server crash of 2013.

Hi Jeff and welcome to Model Ship World. I hope you start a build log on your Constitution model. There are a lot of modifications you can do on this model. Building this model may lead you into building many more wooden ship models.

Hi Casi and welcome to Model Ship World. I look forward to seeing your build log.

Welcome to Model Ship World Michael. The Lowell Grand Banks Dory is an excellent kit for the first time wooden ship modeler. There are several build logs of this model on MSW. I hope you start a build log of your kit so that we can follow along.

My wife asked to borrow them, but I would not let her. I felt so bad that I purchased a pair for her.

It has been a while since posted, but thought that I would share a useful tool that I use for rigging. It is a toenail nipper that I purchased from Walmart. It is manufactured by Japonesque. It has a flat bottom to it and it is a flush cutter. It also has a sharp point that you can get really close to the line that is to be cut. Side View - Notice the sharp point. Here is the link to the one that I purchased: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Japonesque-Velvet-Touch-Pedicure-Essential-Duo/994640842?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&&adid=22222222227276419523&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=332285858061&wl4=pla-636753874486&wl5=9008419&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=online&wl12=994640842&veh=sem&gclid=Cj0KCQjwvYSEBhDjARIsAJMn0li5sJXPBooROIN4T83y-d0T8uMp-ZL5P39GuFWCNafxp1fJ0GQOGgAaAm_sEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds Here is a link to the manufacture's website: https://japonesque.com/products/implements/hand-foot-care/velvet-touch-pedicure-essential-duo/ I was able to purchase it in the store. It was well worth the $13 I paid for it.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
