  1. I think you actually made a nice, little boat from this kit especially considering all the challenges that the quality of the kit materials presented to you. It's hard to continue to work hard on a model that you have become a bit discouraged with it but you persevered and, as you said, learned a lot. Congratulations for sticking with it and finishing it. Your next model will be better because of everything you've learned on this boat. Unfortunately, I have found that I learn as much from my mistakes as I do from the things that I did very well. I'm currently starting the rigging on the Medway Longboat from Syren and I've never done any rigging before. I've had to slow way down and take some time off from continuing so I can read and learn about rigging. There's a lot for me to learn and it feels a little bit overwhelming but I'm beginning to understand more and more through my research. I'm enjoying the whole building and learning process. Make sure you keep it fun! Bob
  2. Beautiful gondola! Thanks for the history of these historic boats too. I think I will start building my Amati Gondola pretty soon. Bob
  3. Those canons are beautiful, Bob. Fantastic painting and coloring! It's going to be a gorgeous model. Bob
  4. I usually use a small center punch or a pointed tool to make a small, pointed dent in the wood at the exact center of the hole and then drill a pilot hole with a very small drill bit. The pilot hole centers and guides the drill bit used to make the finished hole. I use this method for tiny holes drilled with a pin vise and larger holes drilled with power. Bob
  5. I hope you are still making progress on your Pride of Baltimore. She has such beautiful lines and is one of America's most beautiful sailing ships in my opinion. I know you wish that the planking was tighter and smoother but, since the hull will be painted, you can still obtain a nice, smooth hull to paint by using some wood filler and sanding carefully. Don't give up on her; she's a beauty! Bob
  6. Very nicely done! She's a beautiful, little boat. I look forward to seeing your second build. Bob
  7. This might be the most impressive first ship model I've ever seen. It's amazing that you were able to do such a beautiful job building her as your first model. I know I would never have been able to do it. Congratulations! Bob
  8. Yes, I've got the guitar bug for sure! I picked up a cheap, nylon guitar in Kodiak, Alaska, while I was serving aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Storis way back in 1966-67. It gave me something to do when we weren't actively tumbling around the Bering Sea and the Gulf of Alaska. There was a fellow shipmate from Texas who was a very skilled fingerstyle picker and he took me under his wing and gave me lots of pointers and encouragement. I continued to play until my discharge in January, 1970, and then through my college years after that but then I really got away from playing very much after that until I got near retirement. I was rusty but I was also amazed at how quickly it came back to me. I wish I had continued to play all those years in between but it is what it is and I'm loving it again now. Your build is going nicely and your log is really fun to read. Bob
  9. Thanks, Doug. The Batelina is a little gem and it was fun to build. I'm going to take some time to look through some of your builds. You have quite an assortment of interesting models that you're building! Bob
  10. Stunningly beautiful model! I have this kit also and I'll be happy if mine turns out to be half as nice as your build. The Pen Duick is one of the most beautiful sailboats ever made in my opinion. Simply gorgeous! Bob
  11. The Batelina was the second wooden boat I built. It's a beautiful, little model that's suitable for someone who has a small amount of previous experience. It was a perfect next step for me as my second build and you will get excellent service from Zoran also. Bob
  12. After looking through your entire build log, I think you are really doing a very nice job on this kit. Unfortunately, poor instructions, low quality materials and even missing parts is all too common with some of the model ship companies. On the other hand, Syren Ship Model Company and Vanguard Models are two examples of companies that are setting the highest standards for instructions, high quality materials and good customer service. Best of luck on your build. Bob
  13. Hello Algirdas, you have built a beautiful model and what's even more impressive is that it is your first ship! Wow...congratulations and welcome to the forum. Bob
  14. Are you able to order some other kits online from another country? I have had models shipped to me in the USA from Croatia, England and Australia and the international shipping cost was not too expensive. Bob
  15. This kit actually looks fairly complicated for a beginner model. I have found the the instructions from the Artesania Latina models are not very good and that makes things even more difficult for beginners. Take your time and you will have a nice model when you are finished. Bob
  16. Looking good, Dave! It's interesting that the frames on the Indian Girl Canoe are much wider than the ones on the Perterboro Canoe. Bob
  17. Yes, Bob, I play a little guitar and, like you, it's a great source of satisfaction for me for the most part. It can be also be frustrating at times when I'm struggling with a particularly wicked set of chord changes that my aging fingers simply refuse to follow what my brain is telling them to do! I play primarily fingerstyle on an Antonio Loriente, nylon, acoustic guitar. Recently began to dabble in flamenco and purchased a beautiful, handmade flamenco guitar from a luthier in Granada, Spain. I absolutely love that guitar but trying to learn to play flamenco has been humbling to say the least! I still have my first guitar, a 1967 Gibson J-50, and I also have a beautiful Ibanez electric, a cheap nylon electric and a gorgeous Kamona ukelele. Unfortunately, these spend most of their time in their cases. Taking a workshop in making a guitar is something I've been thinking about also. Bob
  18. It looks like I see a Fender amp in the background. Guitars and model ship building go hand in hand as far as I'm concerned! Bob
  19. Great advice and welcome, Wahka. Bob
