Thank you so much, Don. It was your log that spurred me along when I was slowing down. How's your build coming along?

I'm just a couple of feet from the finish line getting ready to make the final lunge! I added lines to the two grapnels and made coils for them and I coiled rope around the windlass and finished the rope with a eye seized on the end. Now I just need to make the oars and finish the display stand.

Yes it is. The piano is satin black and it sits by a large window that gets nice, indirect light and I like to take photos on it especially later in the day when the light is more golden. I just use my iPhone and make minor adjustments in the phone's built in photo editing tools. Looking at the photo of my canoe now I think it's a bit dark and I could have lightened up the exposure just a little. I think you've found a nice section of the driftwood for the display. The canoe sits nicely on it. The poly should help deepen the color in the driftwood and give it a bit more contrast to your canoe. I don't think you want the base and your canoe to be so close in color that they tend to almost run together. I think you want the canoe and the base to be separate points of interest with the canoe being the main focus that the eye is drawn to. That's just a personal choice to consider. She's a real beauty.

That's interesting to hear, James. I always though that all metal needed to have a primer on it before top coating it with the final paint. Are you using the Tamiya Acrylic Paints in your airbrush? Since they have alcohol in them maybe that is why they do well on metal without primer....? I would think that completely water based acrylics, like Vallejo Acrylics, would not adhere as well on metal parts without a primer base but I'm just speculating....??

Don't worry, my copyright hasn't been completed yet so I can't sue you! It looks like you found a nice piece of driftwood. I think it's a great way to display a canoe and you certainly have built a canoe that deserves a beautiful display. I originally thought that I might make a small diorama with the forward half of the canoe pulled up on a sandy beach and tied off to a driftwood log but that was going to take up too much room to display the limited space of our small house. Here's a look at my Indian Girl again:

Thanks very much for your kind words, Bob, and thanks also to everyone else for the likes. Oh boy, I've begun mulling this over and I still haven't made up my mind. I've got several ships on the shelf that I bought along the way in the past two years...probably too many!...and that's actually making the decision process tougher for me. What I have come to realize is that, when I bought these models, I was looking not only for ships that I liked but also kits that I thought would not be way over my head. What I didn't know then is how my choices would evolve as I've seen more of what others are building and my skills increased a little. It's a tough decision because I realize that time commitment for a new build can range from a couple of months to a very long time. I spent 6 weeks just building my Indian Girl Canoe by Midwest! So I know I'm slow!! Here are a couple of kits that I have that I am considering: Pen Duick by Artesania Latina: I love the lines of this historic racing sailboat but I'm not so sure about the quality of the supplied materials and the instructions are very limited. This would also be a good boat to learn to use my airbrush on too. Pride of Baltimore II by Model Shipways: I think this historic ship is stunningly beautiful with it's sleek lines but, like the Pen Duick, I don't think all the materials are of the quality she deserves to built with and the instructions are not the best either. I've been spoiled by the Alaskan Cedar used in the Medway Longboat and the excellent instructions. I like all of Chuck's Syren kits and I know they are high quality and the forthcoming north sea, fishing vessel, Zulu, by Chris Watton and his new Vanguard Model Company, is high on my list but won't be available for about 3 months as I understand. Lots to think about....

I made two grapnel anchors today. I believe that the small details add a lot to a model so I spent a little time refining them. I rounded the edges a bit before I painted them with Black Vallejo Acrylic paint and then weathered them lightly with Doc O'Brien's Rusty Brown Weathering Powder to make them look like metal. Then I made rings for them from 22 gauge black wire. I'll seize them with rope tomorrow. This photo shows the difference before and after weathering the black paint on the anchors. The left anchor is just painted black and the right anchor has been weathered: Here's they are both finished with the rings that I made for them:

Looking great, Michael! I put 15-20 coats of Red Vallejo Acrylic Model Paint on my Medway Longboat. Red is rather transparent and it takes a lot of thin coats to get a really nice depth of color like you're beginning to see.

I'm loving this build, James! Do you need to prime or somehow prepare the brass parts before you paint them? Would acrylic paints work just as well also?

You can probably just take an Xacto blade and carefully clean off any clumps old glue that might get in the way when you reseat the frames. Otherwise, any residual glue should not present a problem when you regale the frames. I remember that a couple of the bow frames on my build would not seat 100% flush with the keel. There was a small gap there and it didn't cause me any problems. I blew up some of the photos on Chuck's build log and it looked like there were some very small gaps on those same frames so I didn't worry about it.

Thank you, Bob. Yes, I have Chuck's base. When I ordered the kit last year I had it him engrave it with my name and 2020. I knew I'd never finish it in 2019 and I figured having 2020 on it would motivate me to not set it aside at some point! I think it could look good on pedestals also.

Thanks for the compliment. Yes, we spent a week camping on Salt Island off the northwest coast of Vancouver Island while taking a week long sea kayaking course. It was a fantastic week with the highlight being watching a pod of Orcas leaping completely out of the water as they were passing by us. You certainly grew up in a beautiful place!

Ok, take my advice with a grain of salt until some more experienced modelers chime in. I think I read where it's best to start in the middle and fair the frames towards the bow and then the middle to the stern or visa versa but start in the middle. Use a sanding block or a fold of sandpaper that spans at least two frames at a time. That's what I did. I think that fairing the frames is one of the most important tasks in the whole build. It sets the foundation for the planks. Keep checking the fairing often with a thin strip laid across the frames and look at how it lays. You want it to lay smooth and fair without gaps and bumps. The trickiest part for me was fairing the frames near the bow. I think I took off a bit too much. Chuck says there shouldn't be any char left on the frames. I think everyone's boat ends up a little different. You just want a fair run of the test strip on all the frames when you're finished. Good luck!
