  1. Everything is looking absolutely top notch Chuck.

Now a question. How was the Anchor Cable passed below deck to the cable tier when weighing anchor? It certainly would not have been left lying on the deck. Nothing to see on David's or your plans. Normally one grating had cut outs for this purpose the gratings on Speedwell are over passageways with cabins on each side, can't see any stowage area there. One of the hatches maybe ? I asked both of the Book authors and never got a suitable answer to this question. It is/was my intention on my 1/48th Speedwell to have a catted anchor with the cable still attached and led aft to pass below decks. Adds a bit more interest to a model IMO.

    Cheers,

  2. Hello Micha,

Can't help with an evaluation of these kits but as you live in the Grampian region you can't be too far from Aberdeen. The Aberdeen Maritime Museum has what I believe to be the Builders model of Thermopylae which I saw when I lived in the Bridge of Don. It's a beautiful model and worth a visit if you're really interested in her.

When the Hall Russell shipyard closed down in 1992 as I understand it most of their archives were given to the Aberdeen Maritime Museum. They may have some plans of her perhaps or some information. Maybe worth your while contacting them.

  3. Out of curiosity I visited the pirates forum and read the article about Chuck's Speedwell. I had a really good laugh at the comment by one of their admin wallahs. "Luckily we have same quality kits from Chinese manufacturers at one third of the price". Quality ???? What planet is that guy on ? Keep up the good work Chuck,I enjoy following your build. Sorry I wont be building your Speedwell as I've started rigging my 1/48th POB version after 5 years of work :).

  4. Very nice Job on the square tuck fashion pieces Mike, not the easiest items to make. I wasn't happy with my first (stbd) one, binned it and had no problem with them after,a lesson learned  I'll bet yours are just as good as the computer generated laser cut versions with the added satisfaction that you made them yourself.

so .... if Byrnes fails to open, take it off the table for now, is there a #2 saw that will perform? not perfectly, universal opinion points to the seemingly unobtainium for the immediate, but adequate no one will have angina over using it?

is Proxon or Micro-Mark acceptable if talked about in hushed voices? i find it hard to believe the future of the hobby clings on one man's hiatus.

    Hi,

There is nothing wrong with the Proxxon FET saw whatsoever. I have had one for several years which does excellent work with no problems,I really like the fact you can tilt the blade for angled cuts. Something which the Byrnes saw cannot do as far as I´m aware. I can´t speak for Micro Mark, however I´ve heard their saw may be a Chinese made copy of the Proxxon saw. I´m fairly certain´that Mr Byrnes business will be open again soon. Patience is a virtue :D

How would you possibly be able to construct a shell-first carvel-built ship? At least with clinker-built ships, the overlap of the planks provides a general direction for where the planks should go.

It was done by the Dutch on a regular basis. There was a build by a Belgian (?) member doing it this way on MSW 1 back in the day.. There is also currently a build doing this in the Ships of Scale forum successfully it would appear.

  7. Hi Turil,

Cornwall model boats sell Model Shipways kits. They appear to have a good selection on their website, and also have a very large selection of Ship/Boat modelling items and tools . I have been buying items from them for years, they have excellent and fast service. My last order took only 5 days from ordering to arriving in my Briefkasten in Switzerland. Postal cost is about 20% of what the American post charges. Please dont waste your money on items like you have underlined. Welcome on board to MSW.

    Siggi,

I regret that you have perceived my interpretation of the stern as being any sort of order.  My intent is to challenge you to verify your plan if it is less complicated.

Planting a seed of doubt about preconceived plans is the goal.  Better now, than after it has been constructed.  Subtleties of tone obviously do not survive either in written form or after translation.

I will do my best to bite my tongue from now on.  Fair winds and calm seas going forth.

Give it a rest,Siggi knows what he is doing by following the original draft of HMS Tiger. He doesn't need your sniping about trivia.

  9. Thank you for the explanation Maurice,a kit modification, makes sense I guess. Epoxy will be a must then when fitting guns through the ports. The words "tweak matters"intrigue me. I'm fitting Speedwells' guns just now,5 port guns fitted and pinned to deck, stbd 5 in progress. No guns being fitted in ports #3. Twice I've knocked off the break (sp) pumps trying to fit guns there, end of story empty ports.

    Rgds,
