  1. There is another option for the deck, depending on how much effort you want to put into it. Decks on real ships are nearly always light colored, thanks to being bleached out by so much sun. Many modelers like to use holly for decking. It can be purchased from wood suppliers in quite thin and/or narrow strips. You could easily lay down a new deck atop the old, if you wanted.
  2. I got the missing gear bay pieces in. It was exactly as much fun as I thought it would be, i.e., none. 😑 I also got the wing skins cut out, edge colored, and shaped. Here they are for a preliminary fit. They will need landing lights installed before being glued on. Strangely, the diagrams also show inner sheaths labeled as part S -- the main spar is even recessed to accommodate the extra layer of paper. But there are no parts S in either the kit or mentioned in the instructions. I will probably go ahead and add something like them anyway to increase the gluing area.
  3. Amati makes a product called the "nail nailer", but you can buy pretty much the same thing at your local ACE hardware store for about 1/3 the price. Personally, I don't use the brass pins. I use push pins driven with a tack hammer into pre-drilled pilot holes.
  4. One thing you'll quickly learn in this hobby is that some manufacturers (I'm looking at you, OcCre) will take a lot of liberty when it comes to naming their kits and providing them with colorful, um -- "histories." It is often a fool's errand to try and figure out what they used for source material. Best to not sweat it too much and just enjoy the build. The flip side of the issue is that you can name your ship pretty much anything you want and the name will be equally valid.
  5. Look what just arrived in my mailbox. I enjoyed your interview -- maybe someday in this life I'll get a chance to tour your new facilities before getting James to take me to a proper fish and chips establishment.
  6. Well, thank you very much! I'm not actually a native of South Carolina, being originally from the foggy far-northern regions of California, which, climate-wise, is much more akin to Scotland than it is to the humid subtropics of Greenville. Let me know if you're ever in the area and I'll take you out for some amazing barbecue!
  7. Welcome aboard, Michael!
  8. I also built this kit as my second wood model. You will enjoy it. If you want to take it up a notch, you can get lots of ideas for detailing the basic kit by searching for flatties online. Good luck!
  9. So, I started skinning the center section. Of course, in my haste I forgot that I hadn't yet installed all of the gear bay parts, but hey -- who doesn't like a little more challenge, right? 😑
  10. The directions next call for the skinning of the central wing section, but I decided to slightly deviate from the suggested sequence. By assembling the entire wing skeleton first, I hope to produce some better seams between the center skins and outer wing skins.
  11. Have you tried using the forum's search feature? There are currently 21 topics with 'Royal Louis' in the title, mostly build logs, including the log you started in 2016. There was also the topic in which you posted the same question last Wednesday, but I've deleted that topic because it was posted in the wrong area.
  12. The first part of the 'guts' are added. The rest is all landing gear parts and will be added later.
  13. And now we commence with the wing, starting with the skeleton of the center section. Next we start on the landing gear bays, which are NOT simple -- gotta pump myself up for that sequence! 😯
  14. Very interesting! The AL version has a very pronounced tumblehome -- makes me wonder whether the two kits are based on roughly the same section of hull?
  15. Hi, @Bertilon! Since you have made a start on your model, I have split off a new topic for you in the build logs section. Enjoy your project!
  16. The worst wooden kit I ever built was Corel's Flying Fish. It has been observed in the past by more than one MSW member that Corel kits seem to follow the rule of "you get what you pay for." Builders rave about their high-end kits, but their cheaper offerings have been fraught with problems. On the bright side, think about how much character you're building!
  17. Welcome aboard, Wayne, and best of luck on your project!
  18. And now the tail wheel fairing is on as well.
