Next he will show us that it is fully functional Although it is on a centimeter-scaled mat, and there is one huge match-stick in front of it, my mind is still struggling with the size of this gun.... Jan

Corel did invent quite a lot on this kit. As I never saw these brackets on any drawings nor on the Original model this kit is based upon, I took the liberty not to install them. I made new chanels, but I didn't look at the model before I did , I foloowed the drawing by Ketting. As he draws the channels way too wide, there is too much distance between my shrouds and the hull... I am always surprised at the relatovely large deadeyes used in those old models, and the complete lack of distance between them. We tend to set the distance almost tow or three times the diameter of those deadeyes. The old models have far less (although this model of Prins Willem is redone by Ketting in the seventies..) Jan

Waterline level. The other does give an awkward appearance of the Rigging. It also kind of hides the steep masts. Jan

Although you don't prefer your models painted, I very much like the black and whiye contrast of these painted clipper hulls. To me, it definitely adds to your outstanding model. Jan

HMS Leopard by gobi71 - 1/300 scale

Ah, that's the trick. Very clever! I guess the glued frames are strong enough the prevent distortion of the two halves. Jan -

Cutting a model in two halves, that's a brave thing to do! Jan -

Hi, Now I start wondering. In previous posts you showed a full hull, now it is only a startboard half. Did you build i as a full hull, and then split in halvee, or did you build two halves, that you clamped together for the pictures in your first post? Also: in some pics it looks as if the decks are build directly into the hull, but you also show a deck out of the hull. Can you explain a bit on your methods? Jan -

I made it easy for myself. I followed batavia with respect to thecolours. In fact that colourscheme was more 18th than 17th century. When looking at the original model, it is much closer to eg the colouring of the Wasa in stockholm. The reason that I choose the ochre was that the sculpting as delivered by Corel does not match to the original. All those nakd women are not there in the original, which makes it difficult to paint the corel-stuff like the original. Besides, I did not trust my ability enough to try something more sophisticated. Jan

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
