Also...just give me a shout when you need a close up.  I have much larger originals and possibly additional photos of what you may be working on.

    Ryland,

I'm really glad that I could be of some help to you.  Not a bad idea, leaving the other garboard strake in while you work on the new one.  If you're not sure about something I did, please don't hesitate to contact me.  Good luck, mate!

Popeye, That’s a first for me. Another neat design by Chuck.

Andy I know you can do it!

Augie, The plans are the best I’ve ever seen but it’s Chucks design and
outstanding instructions that put it way over the top.

John, It’s always nice to hear from you. Thanks

Daniel, The wood is Holly and it simulates white paint really nice. Thanks.

Well we have completed our trip down memory lane. It was a fun one.

Thanks again to all of you who shared it with me.

Time for a build log on the Jolie Brise,

having already seen a couple of builds on the net the kit seems pretty straightforward but nevertheless I've already planned to do a few alterations.

I already made a start on this model a year ago and now it's time to proceed.
Keel and bulkheads went together without any fuss and soon followed the deck and deckplanking.
A couple of the bulkheads were not quite flush with the deck but that was solved with thin wooden strips and some sanding.

The lower decks are covered with cedar strips (these were actually meant for lighting cigars..........)

    and now some pics

Yards, running rigging, anchors and finished model:    Like the masts, the yards were made from dowels with the octagonal sections built up from strip wood. Unlike the standing rigging, which I do from aft to fore, the yards and running rigging are done from fore to aft. The reasoning, however, is the same -- ease of access. All of the yards are mounted on the brass pins that were previously added to the masts.

Running rigging always involves choices as to what to include or exclude. On this build, I included all of the yard control lines ( Slings, trusses, parrels, lifts, ties, halyards and braces)  and many, but not all of the sail control lines ( clews, sheets, tacks, but not buntlines, leechlines or reef rigging for the square yards; halyards and downhauls for the headsails, but not for the other staysails ).

The anchors are from the kit. The stocks were made from boxwood. The buoys were made from tapered dowel.

The scroll saw is fixed and in under an hour I cut all the components for the first frame. When I turned on my disk sander to work on the chocks there was a loud pop, a puff of blue smoke and the unmistakable smell of burn electrical. This would be a disaster if not for the fact I have a Byrnes sander on order - I believe my antique sander had somehow heard a replacement was in the works (it was very old, the face wobbled a bit and the table had a habit of not staying square to the face). I ordered the sander a couple weeks ago so hopefully it will arrive soon.

In the mean time the plan is to continue cutting components and keeping them organized so that when the sander arrives I'll be in good shape to get several frames done is short order. I'll post some photos when I have something good enough for show & tell.

My wife visited me in the shop the other night while I was cutting futtocks. She stood watching for awhile and then said "Do you really enjoy doing this?" to which I answered "Yes I really do!". To tell the truth at first I wasn't sure I would enjoy cutting all the pieces needed and to the tolerances required but now that I've started I can honestly say it's fun. It might be different it I was doing a complete Echo or Swan but the cross section is big enough to really get a feel for it but not so big that you'll still be cutting futtocks a year or two from now.

    Hi Guys,

Yep, points well taken. The shop is a room built down in the basement, part of which is a root cellar. The area where the scroll saw is now located used to be (many moons ago) the garage. When my son moved back after college it quickly went from being a garge for my car to storage for his stuff. He is now married with a house of his own and my daughter also has a house of their own. I still own a bunch of their stuff and it is stored you know where. This area is also used for all sorts of other projects from snowblower reconstruction to building cabinets. There are clear paths between sections but he who strays into an uncharted area is at his own peril

Last night that part kept bothering me so I headed back down to take a crack at making a new part (you are correct Mario, it wasn't hard to make). In short order I had a new part that fit very well and I was back in business. For a while. The old saying, "never overlook the obvious" was never more true. After using my shinny new part for a bit the blade slipped out. No problem, I'll just tighten the set screw a wee bit more. That only worked for a couple of strokes. I gave it one more try and the result was the same. Recognizing that I had over looked something (didn't know what yet) I took the blade holder assembly apart. It quickly became apparent that putting a hardened steel blade between two pieces of steel, one older than dirt (and made out of hardened steel) and my shinny new piece (made out of soft steel) was not a well thought out plan. The soft steel was pretty well scarred from the blade being pulled over the face. That piece is now scrap and I'll be out of the shop for a few days so version two will have to wait. Once I make it, it will be introduced to a propane torch and cold water before it goes back into the saw. Live and learn as they say.

This would all be sort of fun if fixing saws is what I did to relax.

    Onward and upward!

    Longboat completed

    13 weeks, 255 man-hours

The longboat took about 1.5 times longer than it should have because of two major mistakes. I mentioned my first mistake in my last post - I sanded through the hull. It patched up OK with wood filler but the stain was blotchy. My second mistake was to try to line up the ribs by eye. I measured carefully but the result looked terrible, as shown below. I ended up starting a new longboat from scratch. This time I held it up to the light periodically as I sanded. When I could see light through the wood I knew it was time to stop.

Left: What happens when you sand through the hull, then try to line up the ribs by eye.
Right: New hull with ribs aligned with a jig.

    How I aligned the ribs
First I eliminated the center keel strip. You can't see it under the floorboards anyway. Then I used a 1/8" nylon cable tie to align each rib parallel to the last. I used spring clamps to hold the cable tie. CA glue barely sticks to the nylon. The second hull looked SO much better than the first that I'm glad I started over.

The longboat took 27 man-hours to build but it's one of the best tiny models that I've ever built. Maybe I'm finally getting the hang of this precision work.

I did start on the bowsprit. Only a few hours of work so far, but it makes a big difference in the look of the ship.

I'm not a lawyer so this info has been picked up over the years doing software, commercial photography and technical writing.   Basically you are correct.  You can play it at home or lend it to a neighbor but not charge admission.   You can display or use extracts (fair use) in reviews and articles but somewhere the thin line of plagerism is waiting...  You can sell the original DVD/CD but not copies of it.  At least in the USA.  Not sure that all countries have the same rules.

    THE HOTEL

The Crowne Plaza Charleston Conference Hotel will be home base for the Conference. We have arranged a great room rate of $109 for singles and $119 for doubles – the low room rates include the morning Breakfast Buffet.  We have arranged for these great room rates to be available for three days before and after the event for those wanting to extend their time in Charleston.

The hotel has free airport shuttle and their shuttle will also take us to and from some of the 30+ restaurants in the immediate area, though the food at the hotel is both good and affordable.

The hotel is adjacent to the large Tangier Outlet Mall where bargains abound and the hotel’s shuttle will be available to and from the Mall.
