The mizzen sail (and spritsail) actually serves to make adjustments while sailing.

I read this somewhere in one of my books. I don't know how it actually works.

Maybe this explanation already helps a little.

This is from a modern boat. But the explanation is probably also correct for older ships

I'll see if I can still find the explanation in the book.

From the book "galleon by Peter Kirsch".

  3. it's been 6 years since the first pictures of this log were posted on 12 september 2016.

So today not a big update, but looking back on 6 years of fun,  with an  occasional dip if something didn't work from the first time 😉

It started as a simple plan to use Aeropicollo's plans.  This was quickly given up (bad idea)

Thanks to everyone who followed, liked, gave advice and supported this build log.

Without all of you I would never have made it this far.

A lot of rope work will be needed, and the space on the deck will become difficult to access.
That's why I'm going also apply the topsail and work from top to bottom.

I was looking over photos of the replica ship Batavia that Baker thoughtfully provided. My one takeaway was that I might need to rethink my plan to paint the gilded pieces provided with the kit. I thought ships of the era probably didn't have as much glitter as my kit implied, but the Batavia does seem to have more than I would have thought. Also, looking at the photos, I was wondering what is the point of this planking at the bow. It looks almost like a second layer of planking, maybe to provide extra protection when muscling through the waves? These photos were a big help, so I really appreciate being directed to them.

They took the Swedish Vasa partly as an example, and she has those planks too. indeed probably as extra reinforcement against waves
