Hey Chris. I don’t know about the best but my favorites for the smaller 6” files are Grobet or Vallorbe . They’re PRICEY but imo they’re great. The grading system they use (or at least I’m familiar with for the files I have) goes from 0 or 00 (the most corse) and then 1, 2, 3 and 4 to progressively finer finishes. I originally ordered a 4 and it was too fine for initial wood (or metal) removal but was usable for fine finishing. By no means am I an expert and I’m sure others will offer better information. Just google those brand names If you’re interested. Stay Safe...Moab

Drilling holes with crisp edges in wood
Moab replied to laps's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
I place a piece of wood under the piece to be drilled. Keep it tight to the piece. Works great...Moab -
I currently use a twenty year old Microlux drill press. It’s showing it’s age and I’m thinking of replacing it. I’m considering a Proxxon drill press but I’m also attracted to the mill. I’ve never done any milling and would probably use the mill for wood most of the time. But the mill would need to function as my everyday drill press also.
My indecision (mill versus drill press) is based on how easy/convenient/etc. Can I really use a mill as a drill press or am I kidding myself that the mill can be used daily as a drill press. I can only purchase one. Any thoughts?...Moab

I saw an ad for this cement which indicated it was “great for rigging model ship lines.” Has anyone used this product?...Moab

Hello Michael; as always I’m looking forward to your build. It’s interesting how a new project seems to necessitate other sub-projects (e.g. reorganizing a shop, new or modified tools, etc.)...Moab

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
